Lily Allen’s returned dog Mary is ‘alive well and living her best life’ as the singer engages in public slanging match with PETA over ‘dangerous’ post
As a fellow dog lover who has spent years caring for rescue dogs myself, I can empathize with Lily Aldridge’s situation. Adopting a shelter dog is a noble act, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges and uncertainties. In her case, Mary, the poorly behaved pooch, turned out to be more than she could handle.
Lily Allen’s is reportedly alive, well and ‘living their best life’.
In the past few days, the 39-year-old singer found herself at the heart of a commotion, following criticism from PETA, after she surrendered her pet to an animal shelter because it had damaged their travel documents by eating them.
But despite fans and animal lovers being torn over the dividing decision, Lily’s dog, Mary, is reportedly doing just fine, according to TMZ.
According to Animal Haven NYC, the black Labrador previously co-owned by David Harbour has now found a joyful and satisfying conclusion following its return to the shelter in May, 2021.
According to Tiffany Lacey, the Executive Director of Animal Haven, they follow a practice of accepting animals back if an adoption isn’t successful.

Lily later made it clear that her remarks were referring to the passport situation being the final event, following a prolonged period during which she had been helping Mary adjust to living in her household.
She ended her statement on X by hitting out at PETA, writing: ‘Also thank you to @peta for adding fuel to the fire. Very responsible of you.’
The comment sparked a furious reply from PETA’s official X account, who responded:
‘YOU laughed when speaking about abandoning Mary and ruined this poor dog’s life. She thought she had a loving forever home before you tossed her out, calling her “that f******* dog” who “ruined my life.” Shame on you. You don’t deserve even the toy dog we sent you.’
Lily responded by saying: “It’s common for people to chuckle when discussing difficult topics, which is just a part of life.”
I made it clear that we did not leave her behind, instead, she was quickly placed with people we were already acquainted with.
Why do you keep spreading falsehoods? It’s puzzling that as a charity dedicated to animal welfare, you would attempt to discredit someone aiming to improve animal welfare. Your statement is potentially harmful.
Lily obtained a plush toy and a firmly-worded missive from Elisa Allen at the organization, stating, “This truly is the sole pet suitable for your household,” following her narration of Mary’s tale on her Miss Me? podcast.
Lily, a resident of New York alongside her actor spouse David Harbour, 49, and their children Ethel, 13, and Marnie, 11, confided in her friend Miquita Oliver, fellow co-host, about the troubles that came with adopting their dog. Lily lamented that acquiring the pet had taken a toll on her life, as it drained her finances to replace necessary documents, and also prevented her daughters from spending time with their father for extended periods due to complications.
She said: ‘She was a very badly behaved dog and I tried very hard with her but it just didn’t work out and the passports were the straw that broke the camels back so to speak.’
The person responsible for “Not Fair” explained that the process of getting new documents proved to be a real headache, or more simply, an organizational challenge.
As a devoted admirer, I can confidently say that it’s become crystal clear to me – the latest passport mishap served as the final breaking point in my long-standing efforts to help Mary acclimate to her new family abode over these past months.
Posting over the weekend, Lily explained: ‘We rescued our puppy Mary from a shelter in NY and we loved her very much, BUT she developed pretty severe separation anxiety and would act out in all manner of ways.’
“She required constant companionship, not being able to stay unattended for over ten minutes. She took three walks daily; two were accompanied by us, while the third was handled by a local dog walker, along with several other dogs.”
We collaborated with the shelter where she had originally been kept, and they guided us towards a behavior expert and a proficient trainer for her case. A kind volunteer from the shelter would step in to look after her whenever we weren’t around.
After several months of consideration, it was collectively decided that our house was not ideally suited for Mary.
The individual who took her in was someone we were familiar with, and this rehoming occurred less than a day after she was brought back.
‘Mary’s requirements proved too challenging for us to fulfill, but ensuring her well-being and happiness was a crucial factor in the decision we made, despite its difficulty.’
