Lily Allen has come with receipts to her West End Girl tour, literally.
The singer, age 40, began the UK portion of her first tour in seven years this week. She’s performing her popular album, West End Girl, from start to finish.
The album is well-known as a tribute to her former husband, David Harbour, and their difficult split. Lily has reinforced this theme with a memorable outfit she’s been wearing on stage.
While singing “4Chan Stan,” a song about finding out a partner cheated, Lily covered herself with a long piece of cloth decorated with the song’s lyrics and images of receipts.
Audience members at Taylor Swift’s first two shows in Glasgow and Liverpool noticed something surprising on the receipts displayed: they were from tequila bars and Bergdorf Goodman, and appeared to list gifts her ex-boyfriend had purchased for other women.
Okay, so this whole situation? It’s a reference to a song where she talks about never having been to Bergdorf Goodman herself, but finding out her ex took someone else there on a specific date – May 24th. He apparently bought this person a really expensive handbag. And the kicker? She was actually in London at the time, likely fast asleep! It’s a little detail that really adds to the story, you know? It’s all about those little things that stick with you.
During the performance, Lily dramatically ripped away her receipt dress to reveal a delicate, custom-made Self-Portrait bodysuit and shiny burgundy hot pants worn underneath.
The dress isn’t the only connection to the album’s themes of infidelity. During her performance of “Pussy Palace,” Lily sang from a bed next to a Duane Reade bag, a detail that echoes the song’s lyrics about finding a bag of sex toys at her husband’s other apartment.
Throughout her 45-minute West End Girl concert, Lily Allen showcased six different outfits. These included a delicate Valentino slip, a classic tweed Valentino suit, and a striking black leather bustier dress from 16Arlington – a brand she modeled for last year.
Mel Ottenberg, editor-in-chief of Interview magazine, created the stunning outfits for the show. She shared on Instagram that her friend Lily convinced her to return to styling for a tour after a 20-year break – Lily was actually her first styling client!
Okay, so after Lily’s first show, I overheard some people – honestly, it broke my heart – saying they were a little lost with how it all went down. And can you BELIEVE they complained she was only onstage for 45 minutes?! Like, 45 minutes of Lily isn’t enough for anyone, ever! It just felt… disrespectful, honestly. I thought it was perfect, but some people just didn’t get it, I guess.
Everyone enjoyed watching Lily perform her new album in its entirety, though a few people weren’t as enthusiastic about the first part of the performance.
The audience enjoyed a 55-minute instrumental performance by a string trio, featuring popular songs like ‘Not Fair,’ ‘The Fear,’ and ‘Smile’.
This part of the show got a varied reaction. Some people found it amusing and over-the-top, while others felt it was simple and resembled a children’s school performance.
Okay, so I’ve been reading the reviews coming in about X’s concert, and honestly, the feedback isn’t great. One critic put it pretty bluntly – they said it felt more like a grade school singalong than a proper arena show. The general consensus seems to be that they really need to switch things up for the upcoming tour. It’s clear they need a more dynamic performance for a venue that size!
Lily Allen began her performance of “West End Girl” with an orchestral rendition of her popular songs, but surprisingly didn’t actually sing the songs themselves. She performed “West End Girl” in its entirety, a rather unique decision.
Watching Lily Allen’s opening act in Glasgow—a string trio playing her songs with the lyrics displayed for a singalong—was hilariously over-the-top and unforgettable.
Even though there were some concerns about how the concert would go, Lily’s performance was apparently well worth the short wait after her break.
Fans shared their excitement online, with many praising Lily Allen’s performance of ‘West End Girl.’ Several described the show as one of the most incredible and moving they’d ever witnessed, and expressed their happiness that she chose Glasgow as the first stop on her tour. One fan said they were ‘thrilled’ to have been in attendance.
