Lily Allen reveals her guilty pleasure is ‘leaving her children at home’… after admitting she started a family ‘for all the wrong reasons’
As a lifestyle expert with extensive experience in navigating the complexities of modern parenting and career, I find Lily Allen’s candid confession both relatable and thought-provoking. It’s refreshing to see such honesty from someone who has achieved so much in her professional life while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood.
Lily Allen confessed that, when she goes away for work, one indulgence she allows herself is leaving her kids behind temporarily.
During the most recent installment of her podcast, titled “Miss Me?”, the 39-year-old British vocalist openly shared this truth with her trusted companion, Miquita Oliver.
Lily has two girls, Ethel (age 13) and Marnie (age 11), whom she shares custody of with her former spouse Sam Cooper. Currently, they reside with Lily’s new partner, actor David Harbour (aged 48), in the United States.
In a chat about favorite indulgences, the singer from Smile admitted that she appreciates spending time in London (her hometown), while her kids remain in New York.
Although she expressed her delight in going back to her hometown to catch up with old pals, she confessed to being swamped by feelings of guilt and embarrassment afterward.
During the podcast Lily was asked what her guilty pleasure was and she immediately replied ‘Leaving my kids’, to which Miquita mused: ‘Oh yeah, because it is pleasurable?’
Lily continued: ‘Sometimes when I’ve been in New York with the kids for a month and David hasn’t been around and I know I’ve got a trip planned somewhere I’ll get out of the door and just, “ahhhhh,”‘ as she mimicked breathing a sigh of relief.
‘But then I’ll get out the door and half an hour later I feel guilty.’ she added.
In a blink of an eye, it might be less than 30 minutes, perhaps 20, or even just 10, and sometimes even 5. As soon as I step through the door, I’m already having fun, yet I can’t shake off the feeling of guilt.
Later on, Miquita inquired from the performer whether there was a subtle feeling of remorse or guilt that surfaced when she went back to London for professional engagements and reunions, to which Lily affirmed it indeed was.
She mentioned that she too experienced a great deal of embarrassment before her friend intervened, offering comfort by emphasizing the fantastic life she was providing for her kids.
Afterward, Lily made a witty remark: ‘How audacious of me to even attempt some productivity and establish a home for us.’
After confessing in September that she had children for misguided motives, seeking unconditional love, the former singer-actress now speaks openly about it.
Lily shared that she intended for pregnancy to slow down her fast-paced profession and rekindle a lost love, one she hadn’t experienced since childhood.
Lily’s father is Keith Allen, a 70-year-old actor, who left her mother Alison Owen (age 63) when Lily was just four. Lily has been candid about the strained nature of their relationship.
On their podcast, Lily and Miquita openly shared that her longing for children stemmed from a personal quest to find a love she hadn’t experienced yet.
She admitted that perhaps she had kids mainly due to misguided motivations, as she was longing for genuine, unconditional affection – a feeling she hasn’t experienced since her own childhood.
Lily mentioned that her career had been moving incredibly fast, with high-pressure situations, and as someone who likes to please others, she found herself feeling extremely overwhelmed by the events unfolding.
“I didn’t have much of a break, and it seemed like the only way to keep others from bothering me was by focusing on another person who lives within me.
‘They did leave me alone, but I don’t think I really understood what I got myself into.’
After many years living the high life as a famous party-goer in London, she decided to swap city life for rural tranquility and welcomed her first children in 2011.
Reflecting on March, I found myself reflecting on my personal journey when I expressed that my two cherished daughters had inadvertently impacted my professional music career. I made the conscious choice to prioritize their wellbeing over my work commitments, leading me to admit, ‘It seems one cannot have it all.’ Yet, this sentiment does not imply a sense of regret or disappointment but rather an acknowledgement of the delicate balance between family and career.
The actress who was once a singer expressed her opinion that women often face the dilemma of prioritizing their careers or their children, and in her case, she opted for her family.
She shared with the Radio Times Podcast that her kids had significantly impacted her professional success in show business, yet she adores them deeply and considers them as essential pieces of her life. However, when it comes to achieving pop-stardom, they were the ones who thwarted her plans.
‘I get really annoyed when people say you can have it all because, quite frankly, you can’t.’
She added: ‘Some people choose their career over their children and that’s their prerogative, but my parents were quite absent when I was a kid. I feel like it left some nasty scars that I’m not willing to repeat on mine.’
