Lily Allen revealed she experienced suicidal thoughts after learning her husband, David Harbour, had been unfaithful to her for three years.
The 39-year-old singer ended her relationship with the 50-year-old actor in December. She has since revealed that the breakup led to struggles with old habits, including nearly relapsing into drinking and drug use, and developing a serious eating disorder.
Lily recently told British Vogue she decided to seek help at a treatment facility when she began having thoughts of wanting to end her life.
She recently shared with the media that she’s struggled with eating issues for the last few years. Things became particularly difficult during her recent split.
The actor, who has been sober for six years, explained that he felt overwhelming despair. He described how, in the past, he would have turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with such feelings, making it incredibly difficult to simply experience them without using substances.
Entering a treatment facility felt like a step forward for her, especially considering she’d been forced into similar situations before. She recognized it as a sign of strength – acknowledging she needed help and proactively seeking time to focus on her well-being, as her feelings had become overwhelming.

Lily explained that her new album focuses on her relationship with David and talked about her experiences while creating it.
She acknowledged that details about her marriage have been made public, but clarified that those accounts aren’t necessarily completely accurate. She explained that they’re based on what happened, but aren’t a perfect reflection of reality.
Lily described feeling a mix of emotions while creating her latest album, including confusion, sadness, grief, and a sense of powerlessness.
The Daily Mail reported earlier this year that the actress’s new album will be released this fall through her record label, BMG.
She explained that her albums are all connected to difficult life experiences. She said her first album was about her first heartbreak, and her second was, as she put it, dealing with the challenges of becoming famous – which might sound silly, but was a real struggle for her.
My album ‘Sheezus’ felt chaotic because my life had just turned upside down – I became a mom to twins and felt completely out of sync with everything. Looking back, though, it actually makes sense that the album was how it was.
My previous album came about during a difficult time, after my first marriage ended. Now, it remains to be seen what will become of these new songs.
You know, thinking back on my relationship with David, it was a mixed bag, but overall, I have a lot of positive memories. I’m especially grateful for the incredible opportunity our kids had living in America for five years – it really shaped them. And honestly, I feel a lot of empathy for David too. I think breakups are hard on everyone involved, and we all ended up hurting.

Lily and her ex-husband, Sam Cooper, who she was married to from 2011 until 2018, have two daughters: Ethel, 13, and Marnie, 11.
She talked about her teenage daughters and whether she worries about them. She explained that she tries not to be overprotective, because while she wants to shield them from harm, she doesn’t believe that’s ultimately effective.
Right now, a lot of my creative work is focused on supporting them. I want to demonstrate that despite facing incredibly difficult times – actually, twice now – I’m capable of helping us overcome these challenges and move forward.
I’ve been following Lily for a while now, and she recently opened up about her dating life. She explained that turning 40 really changes things – the pool of potential partners just feels different. Right now, she’s focusing on herself, honestly. She’s doing a lot of self-reflection, trying to understand why past relationships played out the way they did. She wants to break some unhealthy habits and is even planning to discuss her relationship with her father with her therapist. It’s really brave of her to be so open about it all.
Lily believes the rise of the internet has changed things for dating. She feels that having so many options readily available online has actually made it harder to find a good partner.
During a live podcast recording in March, Lily revealed she was still processing her recent split.
She admitted: ‘I am not over it. I am sort of running away. Maybe I will have a nervous breakdown.’
Okay, so it’s official – Lily’s actually leaving her townhouse in New York! It just broke my heart hearing it, especially knowing it’s happening after everything with David. I mean, that place felt so *them*, you know? It’s like a whole chapter is closing, and honestly, I’m just devastated for her. It feels like a sign, even though I still secretly hope they’ll work things out. But yeah, she’s moving on… and I’m trying to process it all.

The couple bought an art deco house in Brooklyn in 2020, soon after getting married in Las Vegas. The beautiful home was even featured in Architectural Digest magazine.
News of their breakup surfaced last December, and shortly after, reports emerged alleging the actor from Stranger Things had been unfaithful to the singer.
Lily, hoping for a new beginning as she navigates difficulties in her marriage, has bought a flat in London. She recently shared that focusing on decorating the space has been a positive distraction during a challenging period.
Lily Allen, known for her song ‘Smile,’ recently shared with The Mirror that she’s been finding comfort and inspiration in interior design magazines. She explained that after a difficult period, browsing these magazines has been a positive influence.
In March, Lily discussed her new home on her podcast, Miss Me?, sharing that she’ll be living there with her two daughters. She spoke with her co-host, Miquita Oliver, about the property.
I recently bought a flat in a social housing building in the area where I grew up. I feel like this gives me a bit of leeway, because I don’t want to be seen as an outsider contributing to gentrification.
Lily shared that living in this building has been a lifelong dream. She finally had the opportunity and the means to buy a flat here, but she’s aware that some people may not approve of her choice.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe Lily’s old apartment in New York! It was absolutely incredible. The media room? Totally decked out in tiger print – so bold! And the kitchen… seriously, it was designed to look like a set from The Godfather! I’m obsessed, it was the most glamorous thing ever.
The hotel also features beautifully decorated rooms with a Parisian theme, and an impressive walk-in closet stocked with high-end designer items.

In 2023, Lily and her former partner, David, finished renovating the house with the assistance of interior designer Billy Cotton and architect Ben Bischoff. They showcased the completed project in a tour featured by Architectural Digest.
In May, Lily openly shared that she was feeling very sad and lonely at home in New York City after her recent breakup.
The songwriter, who announced her breakup with David in January, shared that she’s been feeling down because she doesn’t have many commitments keeping her busy in the city.
She moved to Brooklyn in 2020 to be closer to David, enrolling her daughters in local schools.
The singer of ‘Smile’ announced she’s stepping away from social media, explaining that she’s finding it difficult to replace the habit of endlessly scrolling through negative content.
Okay, so here’s what happened with Lily and David’s split. It all started when Lily got suspicious about David and started digging around on the dating app where they first connected. She basically became a detective, thinking he might be talking to other people, and unfortunately, that led to them breaking up. It’s a tough situation, and a reminder that trust is so important in any relationship!
Lily was reportedly devastated to find out the actor had a hidden profile on Raya, a dating app for famous people.
The singer created her own account on the dating app, claiming she was interested in women, and reportedly discovered that David had already made a profile there.
He was reportedly listed on the app as being active for at least a month.
You can find the complete feature in the November issue of British Vogue, which will be available online and in stores starting Tuesday, October 21st.
