Big Hero 6 Deserves Better Than It Got
Based on the popular Marvel Comics team, the 2014 film introduces a new group of superheroes. The story focuses on Hiro Hamada, a young inventor, and Baymax, his healthcare companion robot, as they begin their journey.
Hiro and Baymax team up with their friends to defeat a new villain who steals Hiro’s experimental nanobots. Throughout their adventure, Hiro deals with the loss of his brother, Tadashi, the creator of Baymax, and learns to embrace a new family in his team. Ultimately, the movie is a touching story about love, family, and friendship, all wrapped up in a superhero adventure.
With Marvel movies incredibly popular and selling extremely well, Big Hero 6 was a huge hit – and not surprisingly so. Though it didn’t connect to other Marvel stories, the film still captured the fun and emotional core of a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, combined with the beautiful animation and compelling story that Disney was known for at the time. Its success was further confirmed when it won an Academy Award.
A sequel to Big Hero 6 was initially planned soon after the first movie came out, but the project was put on hold and eventually cancelled. While fans had to be content with a spin-off series that didn’t fully capture the magic of Big Hero 6, the original film remained a hit and hinted at a much larger franchise. With so many live-action remakes and reboots being made today, there’s a chance for Big Hero 6 to return and finally realize its full potential.
Big Hero 6 May Work Better in Live-Action Than Animation
Following the success of Lilo & Stitch, Big Hero 6 would be a great candidate for a continuation. Fans are still hoping for a sequel more than a decade after the first movie, showing continued interest in the story. Although Disney doesn’t currently seem to be planning a sequel, a live-action remake could be a way to bring the franchise back to life.
A new Big Hero 6 movie could start by revisiting the team’s beginnings, opening up possibilities for future sequels and spin-offs featuring the beloved characters. Disney could also potentially connect Big Hero 6 to its other Marvel franchises, like the MCU, Spider-Man Universe, and even the X-Men, through the concept of a shared multiverse. But more importantly, a new film would allow creators to build on the existing world and develop these memorable characters even further.
A live-action version of Big Hero 6 could be successful, potentially avoiding problems Disney has had with other remakes. Some live-action adaptations of animated classics have been criticized for losing the original’s charm and vibrancy. This was particularly noticeable in the 2019 remake of The Lion King, where the playful, animated animals were replaced with realistic but lifeless versions.
Unlike many animated films, Big Hero 6 wouldn’t face major challenges adapting to live-action. While it includes fantastical elements like the robot Baymax, the film is largely set in a realistic, slightly enhanced version of our world. The characters and setting would easily translate to live-action without losing the story’s emotional core. In fact, impressive CGI could make the team even more vivid and believable than in the animated version, creating a remarkably realistic feel.
Following the huge success of the live-action Lilo & Stitch, Disney is likely to remake Big Hero 6. This could revitalize the franchise and allow for new stories featuring its compelling, yet often overlooked, characters.
