Lilo & Stitch vs. Mission: Impossible 8: Who Will Break Box Office Records?
This upcoming Memorial Day weekend, both films are preparing for intense competition at the box office, and there’s a strong possibility that they might break an existing record. At the moment, it seems Disney’s new live-action movie is expected to take the lead in ticket sales.
Predictions indicate that Lilo & Stitch will generate around $150-160 million in North American box offices across 4,410 theaters during the four-day holiday weekend. With pre-sold tickets contributing to potential increases, this number might even rise higher. Interestingly, it previously had a comparable box-office start and eventually grossed $225 million over the Thanksgiving holiday. Additionally, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is expected to perform strongly, with Tom Cruise’s latest action film projected to earn approximately $75-85 million from 3,800 theaters.
It seems that “Lilo & Stitch” is set to triumph in the Memorial Day weekend box office competition. However, if its clout with “Mission: Impossible” combines effectively, they might shatter a box office record. This weekend, there are numerous reasons for moviegoers to visit theaters, including Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” which is still performing well. Consequently, the total Memorial Day domestic box office in 2025 could potentially surpass the current record for the highest grossing Memorial Day weekend ever.
At present, the year with the highest box office earnings is 2013, amassing approximately $306 million from movies like Fast & Furious 6, The Hangover Part III, and Star Trek Into Darkness. If Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible underperform in their projected earnings, they would contribute around $225 million combined. However, if either of these films surpasses expectations, it will be relatively simple to break the current box office record.
Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible To Dominate Global Box Offices
Based on predictions, the reboot of “Lilo & Stitch” is poised to significantly boost Disney’s earnings. Chris Sanders returns as the voice of Stitch, and Maia Kealoha debuts as Lilo Pelekai. This film is anticipated to gross an additional $125 million internationally, potentially pushing its opening global total above $275 million. It could rival Disney’s top live-action remake debuts, with “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast” earning $191 million and $174 million respectively.
Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is predicted to rake in more than $125 million overseas. This suggests that it will probably earn over $200 million globally right from its opening, and there’s more money coming in for this film yet. However, to become one of the highest-grossing movies in the Mission: Impossible series, it still has a significant way to go.
The Final Reckoning is among the priciest films ever produced, not including promotional expenses; however, it’s important to note that the title of highest-grossing film in the series belongs to 2018’s Fallout, which amassed a staggering $791 million globally during its box office run.
Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will hit theaters on May 23.
