Lilo & Stitch Set to Dominate Box Office, Leaving Karate Kid: Legends in the Dust!

The initial skirmish for the summer’s top-grossing movie appears to have concluded prematurely, with “Cobra Kai” spinoff, poised to dominate the box office charts due to its Netflix series popularity and revival of the franchise after 15 years, seemingly falling short in its bid for the number one spot against Disney’s unexpectedly successful animated film featuring a mischievous blue ball.

Before its premiere, “Karate Kid: Legends” has sparked debates and may have been impacted by the acclaim received by “Cobra Kai”. The film currently holds a Tomatometer score of 59%, slightly below the threshold for being considered ‘fresh’. It’s anticipated that it will earn roughly $30 million at the domestic box office. Although this isn’t a catastrophic debut for a movie with a budget of $45 million, it pales in comparison to the earnings of 2010’s “The Karate Kid”.

In the blue corner, the Disney live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch” is impressing audiences, boosted by its popular title character. As a result, predictions suggest that it will earn around $60 million in its second weekend, more than twice as much as “Karate Kid: Legends” and far surpassing many opening weekends of other films released this year.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Continues to Be Disney’s Dark Horse

Upon Disney revealing their newest round of live-action adaptations that encompassed Snow White, the news about Lilo & Stitch being included didn’t generate much enthusiasm initially. Preview images sparked a blend of applause and criticism across social media, but it was the trailers that truly ignited excitement for the film’s prospects.

As Snow White made headlines due to recurring debates over the casting of Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot’s casting amidst escalating Israel-Gaza tensions, and discussions about CGI dwarfs or their absence, Lilo & Stitch steadily grew excitement with a series of entertaining and anarchic promotional stunts, all focusing on its unique central blue alien character.

Over the past several years, it’s hard not to notice Disney’s mischievous alien character everywhere you look. This ubiquity was certain to make “Lilo & Stitch” successful, as anything that dominates popular culture seldom goes unnoticed.

The classic film Snow White, despite expectations, didn’t reach its anticipated box office success. Instead, it seems more likely to garner a larger audience on Disney+ than in movie theaters. Similarly, Thunderbolts*, one of the highest-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, has fallen short in ticket sales. Fortunately, adorable characters like Stitch have compensated for this, easily gaining popularity.
