‘Lilo & Stitch’ live-action sequel is on the way from Disney

Get ready, a live-action “Lilo & Stitch 2” is a go at Disney.

On Thursday, the studio chose its beloved blue extraterrestrial test subject to broadcast the news on social media platforms. This character, who goes by Stitch or Experiment 626 in the film, is often linked with June 26 (or 6/26) by enthusiasts, as Lilo eventually gives him a genuine name.

Initially, the original animated “Lilo & Stitch” earned approximately $273 million at the box office when it was first released in 2002. However, the character of Stitch has maintained its appeal for years, leading to strong merchandise sales and even a new live-action film adaptation.

The news comes as no shock, given that the live-action film directed by Dean Fleischer Camp has already earned over $914 million worldwide since its debut over Memorial Day weekend in May. With a strong possibility of reaching $1 billion at the global box office this year, it’s set to be the first movie of 2023 to achieve this milestone.

The announcement showcasing Stitch cruising around in a pink convertible at Walt Disney Studios can be seen as a triumphant circuit lap. (Notably, the live-action “Snow White,” which came out earlier this year, only earned approximately $205.7 million globally.)

As a die-hard movie buff, I can’t help but marvel at the enduring appeal of Stitch, one of Disney’s beloved characters. The mischievous and adorable extraterrestrial that made his debut in the 2002 animated film “Lilo & Stitch” has certainly earned a spot among Disney’s top-selling franchises.
