‘Lilo & Stitch’ Go Live-Action in New Remake Trailer
It seems as though Disney might have exhausted their supply of cartoons for a live-action makeover, but so far, they haven’t reached that point.
In about a few weeks, we’ll be seeing Rachel Zegler in the live-action version of Snow White, and next year, there’s another live-action treat: Moana, featuring Dwayne Johnson reprising his voice role as Maui. In between these two, Disney is bringing back Lilo & Stitch, a remake of the 2002 animated classic, but this time with a cast primarily made up of real people. (The new Stitch is a computer-generated version of the original character.)
You’re bound to find many familiar elements in the revamped “Lilo & Stitch” from the trailer I’ve shared with you, such as the lush Hawaiian backdrop, the array of charming characters, and the heartwarming theme emphasizing family unity.
Initially, the classic film Lilo & Stitch was one of Disney’s last successful traditionally animated productions. Within just two years, Disney mostly stopped producing hand-drawn animated movies. With the exception of a short-lived comeback in the late 2000s, this trend persisted at the studio.
Apart from the initial “Lilo & Stitch” movie, which earned over $270 million at the box office, Disney also produced a TV series based on it, as well as several animated sequels such as “Stitch! The Movie” and “Leroy & Stitch”. The character has also been featured in video games and Disney theme park attractions.
Here is the film’s official (and familiar) official synopsis:
The film ‘Lilo & Stitch’ is a hilarious and heartwarming tale about a solitary Hawaiian girl and an escaped alien who work together to heal her fractured family. This movie is masterfully directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, with a script penned by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes. The cast includes Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance, Zach Galifianakis, and introducing Maia Kealoha.
The updated version of “Lilo & Stitch” is scheduled to hit the big screens on May 23rd. However, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the live-action remake of “Oliver & Company” to come out soon.
12 Surprising Character Cameos In Disney Movies You Might Have Missed
1. Sebastian in Aladdin
One of the standout moments in the movie “Aladdin” is the exceptional portrayal of the Genie by Robin Williams. He’s quick-witted, unpredictable, and simply a blast to watch. He can transform instantly and grant almost any wish (except for those involving murder or love spells). When Aladdin wishes to become a prince, Genie whips out his spell book. However, it appears he hasn’t used it in a while, as when he does, a familiar character— Sebastian from “The Little Mermaid” — pops out instead. Could it be that the Genie possesses the power to traverse cinematic worlds?
2. Buzz Lightyear in Finding Nemo
In an unexpected twist, characters from toy worlds and marine life typically don’t interact, but in the animated film ‘Finding Nemo’, Buzz Lightyear from ‘Toy Story’ makes a brief appearance. Early in the movie, Nemo is captured by a diver who also functions as a dentist, with a peculiar collection of tropical fish. He discovers that he is to be given as a gift to the dentist’s turbulent niece who shakes her toy bag violently. During a quick scene inside the dentist’s office, we spot a treasure chest filled with toys, among them, Buzz Lightyear. While this Buzz might not be the one we know from our perspective, it’s always possible…
3. Goofy, Donald, and Mickey in The Little Mermaid
In the realm of hidden character appearances, it’s hard to find one more elusive than Goofy, Donald, and Mickey in the movie “The Little Mermaid.” This cameo isn’t immediately noticeable – you need a keen eye to spot it. At the start of the film, King Triton enters Atlantica on a seashell chariot drawn by dolphins. The crowd gathered for the royal concert is vast and diverse, not all of them being merfolk. If you scrutinize carefully to the left side of the carriage, just beyond it, you’ll catch a glimpse of the minuscule backs of Goofy, Donald, and Mickey. Quite a find, isn’t it?
4. Rapunzel and Flynn in Frozen
In the movie “Frozen,” Elsa’s coronation day marked the first time in history that the gates of Arendelle were opened. Unsurprisingly, this event attracted a large crowd, including Rapunzel and Flynn Rider who had now turned brunette. This unexpected appearance sparked a theory among fans suggesting that Rapunzel is actually Elsa and Anna’s cousin, which could explain why she was invited as a VIP. Though the filmmakers haven’t confirmed this theory as true, co-director Chris Buck told MTV News that if fans choose to connect these stories, they are welcome to do so!
5. Magic Carpet in The Princess and the Frog
As a film enthusiast, I’ve always been captivated by the subtle details hidden within Disney movies. Unlike ordinary household items, the carpet from Aladdin transcends its inanimate state, exhibiting sentience and a unique personality that makes it more than just a mere supporting character. Somehow, this magical piece of Arabian rug found its way across continents to appear in New Orleans, making a cameo during one scene of The Princess and the Frog. In a bustling city street scene where Tiana is heading to her second job, if you look carefully at the top right corner, you’ll spot a woman shaking out a rug over her balcony. But that “rug” isn’t just any ordinary rug; it’s none other than Carpet from Aladdin!
6. Pinocchio in Tangled
Despite the fact that Pinocchio’s story takes place in northern Italy and Rapunzel’s kingdom, Corona, is inspired by Germany, you can catch a sneaky peek of the famous wooden doll in Tangled’s Snuggly Duckling tavern during the song “I’ve Got A Dream.” Look up towards the ceiling in the upper right corner when Shorty swings around like Cupid, and there you will find Pinocchio hidden in the dimly lit pub, illuminated only by candlelight.
7. Bill the Lizard in The Great Mouse Detective
As a film enthusiast, let me tell you about an unforgettable character I encountered – Bill the Lizard. In 1951’s “Alice in Wonderland,” he might have had a minor role, but his impact was significant. He was directly inspired by Lewis Carroll’s novel, serving as the comical yet determined figure trying to evict a now-giant Alice from the White Rabbit’s residence. Unfortunately for Bill, his efforts were futile, and he was expelled from the chimney by none other than Alice’s sneeze – a rather abrupt ending that left me wondering where he might have ended up. Fast forward to 1986, and there he was again in “The Great Mouse Detective,” this time as one of Professor Ratigan’s henchmen. Perhaps that sneeze did indeed propel him into another universe?
8. Mrs. Potts and Chip in Tarzan
In the movie “Tarzan,” Mrs. Potts and Chip, characters from “Beauty and the Beast,” make a brief appearance. During the song “Trashin’ the Camp,” Turk is seen drumming on the well-known kettle and teacup that resemble Mrs. Potts and Chip. Since Mrs. Potts and Chip turned back into humans at the end of “Beauty and the Beast,” it seems inconsistent for them to return to their inanimate forms. A fan proposed an explanation for this anomaly, which is known as “The Jane Theory.” This theory suggests that Jane Porter is a direct descendant of Princess Belle and Prince Adam. If we accept this theory, then Belle and Adam would have had a tea set custom-made to resemble the human forms of their friends, Mrs. Potts and Chip.
9. Scar in Hercules
In the movie “The Lion King”, Scar, the main antagonist, doesn’t evoke much sympathy from viewers as he meets his fiery end. You might think you’ve seen the last of him, but in a clever and amusing twist, he reappears in the movie “Hercules”. In Greek mythology, one of Hercules’ tasks is to slay the Nemean lion, but in the Disney universe, that lion is none other than Scar. Hercules proudly displays Scar’s fur as a cape, and wears his head as a helmet. This brings us back to “The Lion King”, where Zazu tells Mufasa, “He’d make a very handsome throw rug.” As it turns out, Zazu wasn’t far off the mark.
10. Belle in The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The famous cathedral, Notre-Dame, is found in Paris, France, and did you know that Disney’s movie “Beauty and the Beast” is also based in France? It’s no wonder then that we see Belle wandering around her town in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. This film takes place a few years, or even months, before “Beauty and the Beast”, as Belle appears to be about the same age. Keep an eye out for the young lady in a blue-and-white dress, deeply engrossed in her book.
11. Jock in 101 Dalmatians
In several appearances throughout the 101 Dalmatians series, Jock – the cherished Scottish Terrier from Lady and the Tramp – is seen. During the “Twilight Bark” scene, he’s the second dog to respond to Pongo’s barks, relaying the message up the drainpipe. Somehow, Jock managed to travel from the small-town setting of Lady and the Tramp to the bustling city of London. Moreover, you can catch a glimpse of him in another Disney film featuring dogs, Oliver and Company.
12. Geri in Toy Story 2
The cameo character, Geri, is more of an obscure reference. He first appeared in a Pixar short film instead of a full-length movie. In the short “Geri’s Game,” you can see him playing chess against himself, but that’s not all he does – he also works as a professional toy cleaner, as shown in “Toy Story 2.” During the DVD commentary, John Lasseter mentioned that they opted for Geri instead of creating a new human character late in production because it was less labor-intensive.
