Lilo & Stitch Crushes Global Box Office, But Minecraft Holds This Surprising U.S. Record

2025 has seen an exceptional summer for family-friendly movies on the big screen, with numerous titles gracing the cinema calendar. “How to Train Your Dragon”, “Elio” and “Lilo & Stitch” have been box office mainstays since June, but only the latter has truly stood out this year. The live-action remake has made history by becoming the No. 1 global movie of 2025, yet it hasn’t managed to achieve one particular feat.

In the global box office race, Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” has outperformed “A Minecraft Movie,” with a total earnings of $957.6 million compared to the latter’s $954.9 million. Despite swiftly overtaking “Sinners” as the second highest-grossing domestic film of 2025 in just a couple of weeks, it has yet to dethrone the reigning champion, “Chicken Jockey.

The currently streaming “Minecraft Movie” has secured a top spot, earning approximately $423.9 million in the U.S. and Canada, surpassing the box office revenue of “Lilo & Stitch,” which stands at $403.7 million.

Currently, there are some major films upcoming such as James Gunn’s “Superman” on July 11 and James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” However, at this moment, no other movie has been able to match the success of “A Minecraft Movie” or the Disney live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch.” As we approach the Fourth of July weekend, “Sinners” sits in third place domestically with earnings of $278.2 million, while “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” holds third position globally with a total of $563.9 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

The blockbuster success of Lilo & Stitch began right away as its $182.6 million four-day opening set a new record for the highest Memorial Day weekend debut, surpassing Top Gun: Maverick’s earnings of $160.5 million, as reported by Deadline.

The audience has given the film a fantastic 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, which is higher than the combined rating of 71% from critics. In TopMob’s review of Lilo & Stitch, Sarah El-Mahmoud expressed being pleasantly surprised by the story once more, giving it a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Although there have been some modifications for live-action and an ending that has sparked some strong disagreements, it appears this film is winning over moviegoers worldwide based on the numbers.

Meanwhile, a Minecraft film ignited the box office in April, surprising critics who collectively gave the world-construction movie a modest 48% rating. However, fans and parents alike who watched it with their kids seemed to have a different opinion, bestowing an 85% approval on the Jason Momoa film. It seems that experiencing the movie amidst an enthusiastic crowd of fans can indeed be quite enjoyable!

With a Minecraft movie now streamable worldwide, you’ve got two options: the regular theater release or the “Block Party Edition.” However, parents, you might want to think twice before letting your kids watch the “Block Party Edition.
