Lili Reinhart has never wanted to be online less than right now
Uta Briesewitz, an accomplished cinematographer and TV director, steps into feature film direction for the first time with “American Sweatshop,” premiering globally at the 2025 SXSW Film and Television Festival. Lili Reinhart portrays a young woman who lands a job as a content moderator at a social media platform. As she grapples to separate herself from the intense and unsettling visuals she encounters daily, her fixation on uncovering the reality behind a particularly graphic video grows stronger.
In Austin, Texas, Briesewitz and Reinhart dropped by the LA Times studio for a discussion about the film. Reinhart shared insights on her growing reflection over her personal internet usage habits.
Reinhart expressed that he’s found himself yearning for less online presence than ever before, largely unrelated to this movie. He believes the current state of the internet, with its prevalence of negativity, hate, and fear, is the primary reason. He doesn’t wish to be involved in such a negative environment.
Reinhart mentioned, “I’ve made an effort to act as a mini content moderator on my own social platforms. This is because I understand that the more I engage with certain types of content, the more of it I’ll receive. So, I strive to remain mindful online about what I interact with, ensuring that I promote positivity, humor, and lightheartedness. By doing so, I can expect to receive similar content in return.
