Lila Moss fronted a new campaign as Barbie launched its first ever ‘diabetic doll’ this week.

For the project, the 22-year-old model, who manages her life with Type One Diabetes, initially donned a captivating pink silk minidress. Later, she switched to a black top and white skirt for an additional photograph.

The ‘diabetic’ doll comes equipped with a persistent blood sugar monitor and an insulin infuser, similar devices Lila has previously discussed.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that a renowned toy company has taken a significant step towards inclusivity by introducing the very first Barbie doll representing a child with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). This groundbreaking move allows more children, especially those battling this condition, to find a relatable figure within their collection of dolls.

I’ve had the pleasure of contributing to the pioneering work of Breakthrough T1D, the world’s top organization dedicated to type 1 diabetes research. Together, we’ve designed a unique doll that doubles as a stylish purse, ideal for carrying quick snacks on-the-go.

The company has collaborated with fashion model Lila, a diabetic who relies on insulin, for the launch event.

Previously, the young model talked about her health situation during an episode of Vogue’s In The Bag YouTube show, following her unique choice to don the monitoring device while strutting down the runway.

As a devoted diabetic, I always carry sugar tablets with me just in case my blood sugar levels drop. To regulate my insulin levels, I use an ingenious device attached to my leg, which is essentially a life-saver for me.

‘This is very important to keep in my bag, it comes with me everywhere.’

Concerned about losing her crucial gadget, she mentioned, “I also have an Apple AirTag, so I can track it using my phone.

In 2020, she shared with The Kit that while diabetes isn’t apparent on the outside, most people might be unaware of her condition because it’s hidden.

Type 1 diabetes causes the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood to become too high.

The condition arises when your body fails to generate sufficient amounts of a substance known as insulin, crucial for regulating blood sugar levels.

You need daily injections of insulin to keep your blood glucose levels under control.

At fifteen years old, Lila secured her debut modeling job, becoming part of a Marc Jacobs Beauty campaign, an achievement that happened a year earlier than her mother started in the same profession.

Even though her mother is a well-known model in the industry, Kate reportedly encouraged Lila not to pursue a modeling career like her.

‘My mum always put me off [modelling],’ Lila said. 

‘She was always like, ‘If you wanna do it, you can, but I wouldn’t recommend it.”

In my professional opinion, I’ve always maintained that the limelight associated with modeling success doesn’t faze me, despite my parents’ concerns about shielding me from such fame. It’s a part of my journey and path that I embrace wholeheartedly.

She reflected: “Indeed, I have experienced it personally, which makes me more equipped to handle it. I’ve had to decline requests from others, but I always manage to do so in a kind manner.

In simpler terms, during the first decade of the 2000s, Lila’s dad, Jefferson Hack, was romantically involved with someone named Kate. Jefferson Hack is a journalist by profession.

Jefferson and Kate, who were together from 2001 to 2004 and welcomed Lila into their family in 2002, maintain a friendly bond and made sure their little girl had a consistent visitation schedule with both parents during her upbringing.
