Like A Dragon Series Won't Stray From Focus on 'Middle-Aged Guy Things' Ryu Ga Gotoku Assures

As a gamer with a fair share of years under my belt, I must admit that the news about Like a Dragon/Yakuza staying true to its roots is music to my ears. The series has always been unique in its portrayal of middle-aged protagonists, and it’s refreshing to see the developers embracing this aspect rather than succumbing to the pressure of change.

As a gamer here, I can personally confirm that the creators behind Like a Dragon/Yakuza have guaranteed us fans that they won’t be veering away from the core concept of middle-aged heroes living out “middle-aged guy experiences”. In fact, Director Ryosuke Horii emphasized that this is one of the series’ key attractions.

Horii expressed that Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s unique appeal lies in this particular aspect, as shared with Automaton (reported by VGC). In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, three jobless middle-aged men embark on an adventure together, saying things like “let’s go to Hello Work”. Unlike the youthful vigor of typical hero groups, these characters bring an authenticity that comes from their age. This authentic portrayal is what sets the game apart and gives it a fresh feel.

In simpler terms, Horii and Lead Planner Hirotaka Chiba credit the distinct ambiance of the Like a Dragon series to “relaxing with older men at a bar”, as opposed to “participating in an energy-draining drinking spree with young folks”. Chiba noted that this tone permeates through the game, even during seemingly casual conversations.

In simpler terms, “Chiba explained, for instance, there’s a discussion where Adachi is uncertain whether to drink beer or not due to his concern about his uric acid level. This is because we identify more with the robust conversations typical of middle-aged men, as opposed to youthfulness.”

Regarding the growing fanbase, particularly the influx of female gamers, for the Yakuza series, notably “Like A Dragon,” the studio has no immediate plans to alter its primary themes or dialogue subjects.

“We’ve seen a significant surge in new followers, many of whom are women, which we’re thrilled and appreciative for. But rest assured, we don’t intend to alter our discussions deliberately to suit these newcomers. Doing so would prevent us from continuing discussions on topics like uric acid levels,” Horii chuckled about.

In the latest installment of the series titled “Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth“, protagonists Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu find themselves in the tropical paradise of Hawaii, marking the first time the series ventures abroad. The upcoming entry in the Like A Dragon/Yakuza series will be unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show, which takes place later this month. Prior to that event, an RGG Summit is scheduled for September 20th.

Currently, Amazon is working on a live-action Yakuza: Like A Dragon series for their streaming service, Prime Video. This exciting project is set to debut on the 24th of October.
