As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about Tencent’s upcoming open-world survival title, Light of Motiram. Having played my fair share of survival games, from the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Fallout to the mystical island of Ark: Survival Evolved, I’ve grown accustomed to the thrill of surviving against all odds.

Tencent unveiled a fresh open-world survival game titled “Light of Motiram.” This upcoming title is slated for release on Android and iOS mobile devices, PCs, and PS5 platforms. The trailer indicates that Light of Motiram will feature survival challenges against monsters and crafting aspects, similar to the Horizon game series.

In a post-apocalyptic setting, the story of Light of Motiram unfolds in the year 2068 AD, where the Earth has been transformed into an expansive wilderness inhabited by colossal mechanical creatures known as Mechanimals. Humankind is starting over, navigating a primitive era characterized by harsh survival conditions. The game offers an immersive experience as you traverse breathtaking landscapes, ranging from lush tropical forests to deserts and snowy peaks of the enigmatic world called Motiram.

The essence of this game revolves around survival. Prepare to confront harsh climates, formidable beasts, and an endless series of trials. To prosper, you’ll need to skillfully utilize your environment, battle bosses, and learn to adapt. Construction is also vital – from creating robust shelters to grand forts, and even collaborating with friends to hunt, collect resources, and construct together.

According to the information provided, combat incorporates dodge, block, and counterattack actions that you can combine with your personally tailored Mechanimal allies to gain an advantage. With more than 100 distinct Mechanimals to capture, you can teach them skills for battles or resource collection, customizing them as needed.

What tweaked my interest even further is that there is a desi (Indian) inspiration here. The Indian elements in the game can be easily seen, with the name Motiram is an Indian name that translates to “deep thinker”. We also have Mechanimal names such as Hanuman and Agni already. However, I’m not sure about the “Indian” inspiration for the gameplay yet.

Light of Motiram risks being seen as a copy of Horizon rather than just inspired by it

As a gamer, I’ve got to share some thoughts about this comparison I’ve been noticing, and it seems like we’re both seeing the same thing – there’s an uncanny resemblance to Horizon, but upon closer inspection, it feels more like a copy than an inspiration. There are specific elements of the game that have me questioning this. At first glance, the cover gives off a familiar vibe, making you feel like you’ve seen the logo somewhere before.

If you’re familiar with Horizon’s logo, it becomes clearer how much the font resembles. Furthermore, the gameplay and game world elements also share similarities. The inclusion of a female protagonist who bears a strong resemblance to the one in Horizon doesn’t make things less confusing.

The battle shares a resemblance to Monster Hunter, but I could be mistaken. Take a peek at the trailer for yourself and let me know what you think. While there are similarities, the game does have its unique gameplay aspects, so it’s not exactly a carbon copy.

Let’s cross our fingers that it doesn’t suffer the same fate as Miraibo GO, a game modeled after Palworld, which was released last October 2024 only to be shut down due to a copyright issue.
