Light of Motiram is Tencent’s Horizon-inspired open-world survival coming to Mobile, PC, and Console

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming open-world survival title Light of Motiram has piqued my interest significantly. Having grown up on classics like Monster Hunter and the Horizon series, this game seems to be a tantalizing blend of both worlds – or should I say, Mechanimal worlds?

Tencent has unveiled a fresh open-world survival game titled “Light of Motiram”. This intriguing title is planned for release on Android and iOS mobile devices, PCs, and PS5 platforms. A preview trailer suggests that Light of Motiram will feature survival against monstrous creatures and crafting aspects, reminiscent of the Horizon series of games.

Explore a futuristic land as you fight for survival in Light of Motiram

In the year 2068 AD, the setting for Light of Motiram is a post-apocalyptic world, now a vast wilderness inhabited by colossal mechanical creatures we call Mechanimals. Humankind is attempting to rebuild and adapt in a new, primitive age where survival is challenging. The game invites you on an adventure through breathtaking landscapes, from lush tropical forests to arid deserts, icy tundras, and snow-capped mountains of the enigmatic world named MOTIRAM.

The essence of this game revolves around survival. You’ll encounter harsh weather conditions, fearsome creatures, and a steady stream of obstacles. To prosper, you need to utilize your environment effectively, overcome bosses, and learn how to adapt. Construction is also crucial – from constructing robust shelters to grand forts, and even teaming up with friends to hunt, collect resources, and build together.

According to the details provided, combat involves darting away, shielding yourself, and striking back, which you can combine with your personally tailored Mechanimal allies to gain an advantage. With more than 100 distinct Mechanimals to capture, you can instruct and personalize them for fighting or resource collection.

What tweaked my interest even further is that there is a desi (Indian) inspiration here. The Indian elements in the game can be easily seen, with the name Motiram is an Indian name that translates to “deep thinker”. We also have Mechanimal names such as Hanuman and Agni already. However, I’m not sure about the “Indian” inspiration for the gameplay yet.

Light of Motiram risks being seen as a copy of Horizon rather than just inspired by it

Allow me to discuss the similarities I’ve observed. Much like other games, Horizon appears to be a close relative in terms of inspiration, but upon closer inspection, it seems more like a copycat. There are several elements in the game that led me to this conclusion. The design on the cover itself gives off a familiar vibe, making you feel like you’ve seen the logo before.

If you’re familiar with Horizon’s logo, it becomes clearer how much the font resembles. Furthermore, the gameplay and game world elements share a similar appearance. Lastly, featuring a female protagonist who looks strikingly like the one in Horizon doesn’t make things less confusing.

The battle scenes resemble those found in Monster Hunter, but I may be mistaken about this. I invite you to watch the trailer and express your opinions on it. Despite some similarities, there are unique gameplay aspects in the game, ensuring it’s not merely a copycat.

Here’s crossing my fingers that it doesn’t suffer the same fate as Miraibo GO, a game modeled after Palworld, which was abruptly closed down less than a month after its release in October 2024 following a copyright dispute. Keep an eye on Motiram’s official website for updates about testing phases, registration procedures, and the eventual launch across various platforms, including mobile devices.
