Liev Schreiber recalls trans daughter Kai’s low-key coming out: Wasn’t ‘that big of a deal’

Liev Schreiber expressed great respect for his daughter Kai, who announced her identity as transgender in a straightforward manner.

In a recent interview with Variety, published on Thursday, the star of “Ray Donovan” expressed that the most impactful moment was when she requested us to use different pronouns for her.

57-year-old Emmy-nominated actor expressed his backing for his daughter as they prepare to attend this Friday’s Ali Forney Center spring gala, an organization dedicated to aiding and housing homeless LGBTQ+ youth. He is the father of 16-year-old Kai and 17-year-old Sasha, whom he shares with actress Naomi Watts, known for her role in “Mulholland Drive.

Schreiber, reflecting back, mentioned that “Kai has always been the person Kai is.” He added that when his daughter revealed she was transgender, it didn’t seem like a significant change to him because she had exhibited such strong femininity for a long time prior. He admired her as a “true fighter,” without specifying the exact moment she came out.

Kai, a newcomer in the modeling world, just graced Valentino’s Fall Winter ’25 campaign. As per her IMG Models bio, this is her professional debut. Although Schreiber mentioned that Kai’s coming out was somewhat quiet, he emphasized to the media outlet, “It’s crucial for her to declare, ‘I am trans,’ and ‘Take notice of me.’

Schreiber joins a small group of famous fathers such as Dwyane Wade (former NBA player), Marlon Wayans (actor), and Robert De Niro, who have openly expressed their support for their transgender children. Recently, Robert De Niro, famously known for his role in “Raging Bull,” publicly declared his love and support for Aaron, now known as Airyn, after she announced her transition in an interview with Them magazine last week.

De Niro, father to Airyn along with Toukie Smith, casually commented, ‘I just don’t understand why it’s such a fuss.’ He continued, ‘Regardless, I adore all my kids.’

Instead of openly discussing his own experiences with raising transgender children like some celebrities, Schreiber chose not to follow the same path. In an interview with Variety, he stated that he doesn’t have the solution for every child, acknowledging factors such as a parent’s personal background, family spirituality or religious beliefs. However, he did share one piece of advice for parents: “Teenagers can be challenging and difficult.

He stated that their identity as transgender is irrelevant in this situation, but it’s important to remember that a trans teenager is still just a teenager. They can be challenging quite often, and Kai certainly fits that description – he’s fiery and vocal.

From 2005 to 2016, Schreiber and Watts were in a romantic relationship. Even after their separation, they’ve both taken their kids to film premieres and shared their excitement on social platforms.

In a recent Instagram post, Liev Schreiber affectionately referred to someone as “the one, the only, the unstoppable @kaischreiberr,” which was his daughter making her runway debut in March.
