As a dedicated follower of the lives of the stars that once ruled Hollywood, I find myself deeply saddened by the passing of Scott Thorson at the tender age of 65. His life story, filled with glitz, glamour, and tragedy, was immortalized in the critically acclaimed film “Behind the Candelabra,” which captured not only his tumultuous relationship with Liberace but also the excesses and eccentricities of the era.

Liberace’s former lover Scott Thorson has died at the age of 65.

In 2013, the character portrayed by Matt Damon in the HBO movie “Behind the Candelabra,” which was based on a 1988 book, passed away at a Los Angeles medical facility. According to TMZ, this happened after a long struggle with heart disease and cancer, which he fought bravely.

Thorson’s connection with the renowned entertainer Władziu Valentino Liberace began when Thorson was 18 years old, at a time when Liberace himself was 57. This information is reported by the outlet.

In 1982, which was five years prior to Liberace’s death from HIV/AIDS-related issues in 1987, Liberace dismissed Thorson from his employment. However, it was Thorson who had been let go earlier, five years into their working relationship.

Thorson initiated a $113 million lawsuit for palimony against Liberace, following his dismissal from the entertainer’s employment. This lawsuit, as reported by TMZ, marked the first same-sex palimony suit filed in the U.S. The case was eventually settled out of court in 1986.

According to Variety, Liberace asserted that he was not homosexual and testified in court that he and Thorson had not engaged in any intimate acts together.

At the settlement, Thorson received a sum of seventy-five thousand dollars in cash, along with three cars and three dogs worth twenty thousand dollars each, according to Variety’s report.

In 1988, Jess Marlow (formerly known as Thorson) published his memoir titled “Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace.”

One of the points Thorson made was that Liberace allegedly financed multiple cosmetic surgeries for him, including a chin augmentation and rhinoplasty, to make Thorson appear more like a younger version of Liberace.

Liberace incorporated Thorson into his Las Vegas stage performances by having him appear in an ostentatious rhinestone costume while driving Liberace onto the stage.

According to previous statements by Thorson, some of his drug-related issues were connected to the numerous surgeries he underwent at Liberace’s request. Following these surgical procedures, he began using drugs like quaaludes, amphetamines, cocaine, and Demerol, as reported by Variety.

In 2013, Steven Soderbergh helmed an HBO movie adaptation of Thorson’s book, starring Matt Damon as Thorson and Michael Douglas portraying Liberace. The cast also included Scott Bakula, Rob Lowe, Dan Aykroyd, and the late Debbie Reynolds.

The movie received rave reviews from critics, earning Douglas a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film, as well as nominations for Damon and Lowe.

The movie additionally won 13 Prime-time Emmys, among them the Best Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Film category for Douglas, and the Best Directing for a Miniseries, Film, or Dramatic Special award for Soderbergh.

In addition, Thorson had ties to a previous brutal incident in Hollywood, namely the Laurel Canyon Murders that took place in 1981, which included the late adult film actor, John Holmes.

1997’s film Boogie Nights and the 2003 movie Wonderland, both portrayed grisly murder scenes that were inspired by real-life events, with Val Kilmer playing the role of Holmes in the latter.

The upcoming docuseries The Wonderland Massacre & The Secret History of Hollywood will also delve into a fresh examination, and it’s scheduled to debut on MGM+ from September 8 onwards.

It is adapted off a 2022 podcast Thorson did with author Michael Connelly titled The Wonderland Murders and the Secret History of Hollywood.
