Liam Payne’s sister Nicola heartbreakingly admits ‘I hate that this happened’ in emotional tribute after watching him in Building The Band – nine months after his tragic death

On Instagram yesterday, Liam Payne’s sister Nicola honored the memory of a deceased musician she had watched on Netflix’s ‘Building The Band’.

Nine months on, I can’t help but confess my deep anguish, for I find it unbearable that such a devastating event occurred. I fear I may never come to terms with his loss.

Before the sad death of a One Direction band member in October 2024, the show was already filmed and premiered on the streaming service’s platform on July 9.

In October of last year, Liam, who was a guest judge for the show, sadly passed away at the age of 31 following a fall from a third-story balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires.

Nine months ago marked a life-altering event for us, and it’s still challenging for me to grasp its impact. I wonder if I’ll ever truly comprehend it, or if I even desire to do so. (Nicola’s post)

Liam, you’re absolutely extraordinary! To all of us fortunate enough to know and cherish you, life has been immeasurably enriched.

Today, the world catches only a sneak peek of your fervor and skill, and it’s truly astounding how impressive you are in this performance!

Your heart was always filled with genuine care for those around you. You had a strong desire to bring about positive change, and it seems as though you shine brightly on that stage, as if it’s where you truly belong.

In this role as a judge, you shine as a guide, an encourager, and someone who isn’t afraid to speak up. Your performance on this show has filled me with immense pride that I haven’t felt before.

‘I just wish you got to see it. It’s everything we knew it would be when we were at filming.

This program has a unique, cherished spot in my heart as it was one of our last encounters, during which I had the privilege to observe your brilliance radiate so vividly. Yet, it also serves as a connection that keeps me feeling near you even now.

‘I love you so much, and I miss you even more. I hate that this happened.’

In this close-knit family, Nicola and Ruth are the eldest sisters to Liam, who is therefore the baby among the trio of siblings.

In the initial episode, viewers of Building The Band found themselves emotional only five minutes in, as Netflix poignantly honored Liam with a touching and bittersweet salute.

Over a span of ten episodes, viewers pondered how the series would handle the sudden demise of the musician, given the speculation about reducing Liam’s role in the show following news reports.

To begin the episode, AJ delivered a compelling speech that left viewers in tears.

Initially, when we gathered for the making of our band, we hadn’t foreseen ourselves having to bid farewell to our comrade, Liam Payne, so soon. This was the opening as a sequence of his pictures and videos from the program unfolded.

He added: ‘In upcoming shows, Liam serves as a guest judge. His involvement showcases his profound affection for music and his relentless determination to aid others in discovering their own voice. It is in this spirit that we are dedicating this series to Liam and his loved ones.’

Building The Band is available to stream exclusively on Netflix now.
