Nicole Scherzinger has revealed what she and her former mentee, Liam Payne, texted about on the day he passed away. She shared the content of their final text exchange.
Liam‘s incredibly popular band, One Direction, first came together as contestants on the UK version of The X Factor. During that time, Nicole was one of the show’s celebrity judges.
I’ll never forget how Nicole Scherzinger, who’s 47, really took Liam under her wing. She was such a guiding force for him, and I was always so impressed by their connection. It breaks my heart that he passed away so young, at just 31, in Buenos Aires last year, but I’m grateful she was there for him until the very end. She truly remained a source of guidance for him.
Last October, he tragically died after falling from a hotel balcony. A later toxicology report showed that he had alcohol, cocaine, and a prescribed antidepressant in his system.
Even after hearing the devastating news, Nicole performed onstage that night in her production of Sunset Boulevard, a musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. He later shared that same month he had received a text message from Liam on the very last day of his life.
Oh my gosh, you guys, I’m literally dying! Nicole has *finally* told us what she talked about with that amazing young artist she helped become a star! It was in an interview with the Times of London, and I just *had* to share. I’ve been waiting for this moment forever!

She revealed she’d previously been aware of his presence in Argentina, describing it as just chit-chat and pretty light, in a new profile for the publication released this week.
For one of his final projects, Liam participated in a reality show similar to The X Factor, titled Building the Band. In this show, he and Nicole collaborated with Kelly Rowland as mentors guiding the contestants.
I really loved Liam. He was a genuinely kind person. I didn’t know him well when I formed One Direction. I simply saw these gifted young men and thought: “Having been in a girl group myself, I understand how powerful a group can be,” Nicole explained.
She also thought about the professional commitment that motivated her to continue with her performance of Sunset Boulevard on the day Liam passed away.
‘The show must go on. From then on, I dedicated a little part of the show to Liam every night. Just a little moment that always made me think of him,’ she said.
Oh my gosh, when they asked her about Liam’s passing and if it made her think about her own life in the spotlight, she just… she just *got* it, you know? She said we desperately need more compassion. It was so powerful! She was talking about how our phones, while they connect us, are actually, like, working against us. They’re part of the problem! And then she said – and I almost cried – she said she wishes we’d just cancel cancel culture! Seriously, she’s so right! It’s everything I’ve been thinking!
Several weeks following Liam’s death, she faced significant criticism online after leaving a comment on a post by comedian Russell Brand. The comment resulted in a wave of negative reactions on social media.
Russell shared a picture of a hat inspired by the ‘MAGA’ style, but with the message ‘Make Jesus First Again.’ On America’s Election Day, Nicole replied with: ‘Where do I get this hat!!!?‘

Fans who generally support left-leaning political views reacted strongly, claiming Nicole had publicly shown support for Donald Trump. However, this controversy didn’t negatively affect ticket sales for her revival of Sunset Boulevard; in fact, revenue increased that week, according to Deadline.
Approximately a week following Liam’s balcony fall, Andrew Lloyd Webber, a composer known for his work on Sunset Boulevard, shared that Nicole had been exchanging text messages with him on the day of his death.
He revealed to Billboard that something people might not know is that she mentored Liam, who was in One Direction. He shared that even on the Wednesday that he passed away, she was still exchanging texts with him.
Andrew, known for his work on shows like Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, highly commended Nicole for performing on stage immediately after learning about the passing of Liam.
The six-time Tony winner stated, ‘Considering she had just learned of his death, the very fact that she performed in the show is remarkable.’
“Honestly, she’s a truly remarkable woman. Without a doubt, she’s one of the best performers I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with,” Andrew stated.
