Daniel Neeson, son of actor Liam Neeson, recently had surgery to correct a rare heart condition. He shared the news with his followers on Wednesday.
Okay, so I’ve been following Daniel for a while now, and it’s just… heartbreaking. Apparently, doctors warned him years ago that he might need heart surgery down the line, so he was getting checkups every two years, just to be safe. But then, things got really scary. He started having serious problems with his heart – his left ventricle got really stretched out, and his aorta started getting bigger, which is… well, it’s just terrifying. I’m so worried about him!
He then shared photos and videos from his hospital recovery, including the heartwarming moment he finally got to go home.
I’ve been so inspired by Daniel’s story! He’s shared how much his fiancée, Natalie Ackerman, has been his absolute rock throughout his health challenges. It’s so lovely to see them supporting each other, especially since they recently got engaged back in September. It just goes to show how important a strong partnership is, particularly when life throws you curveballs.
He is the son of Liam and the late actress Natasha Richardson, who sadly passed away in 2009 at the age of 45 following a skiing accident and a head injury.
Daniel was born with a heart condition called Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV). This means the valve in his heart has two parts (leaflets) instead of the usual three.
I’ve been following research on this for a while now, and it’s startling to learn that roughly 2% of us have it, completely unaware. What’s even more concerning is that it can lie hidden for years – sometimes decades – before potentially leading to heart valve problems or a dangerous widening of the aorta. It really highlights the importance of regular checkups, even if you feel perfectly healthy.
I had regular heart checkups twice a year for most of my life. Eventually, my heart began to stretch and weaken, and my aorta became enlarged.
I suspected I would eventually need surgery. While many people with a bicuspid aortic valve have procedures later in life, I ended up needing mine much sooner.
Taking control of your health is incredibly empowering. It’s about being prepared and staying healthy, rather than just dealing with problems as they come up. Being proactive is key to good health.
It’s strange to think that a major difficulty in your life was actually growing within you all along, without any obvious signs. It wasn’t a sudden event, but simply a result of your biology and when things happened.
‘I’ve always prided myself on pushing through battles and working to control my environment.
This experience was unlike anything else. It demanded complete acceptance and being fully present in the moment. It meant releasing control and placing faith in the skill of the surgeons and nurses, and in a larger power beyond myself.
I focused on controlling my thoughts and inner state, accepting that I couldn’t always control what happened.
Getting through this wasn’t about not being afraid; it was about embracing the process of recovery and fully focusing on the present moment. I viewed the operation as a meaningful ritual, rather than just a medical procedure.
I’m incredibly thankful for the amazing care I received from Dr. Leonard Girardi and his team at Weill Cornell / NewYork-Presbyterian.
To the incredible doctors and nurses of the ICU – thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are all amazing and deserve endless appreciation.
‘Thank you to my rock @natalieack and to my family for being there every day.
Honestly, getting better has been amazing – slow, yes, but so, so worth it. I’ve learned I have to be my own best advocate, really tune in to what my body is telling me. And seriously, everyone needs to get their heart checked! I mean, even if you feel totally fine, just go to a cardiologist. It could save your life, and I wish I’d known that sooner.
Focus on right now, and don’t worry about the future. Trust that things will work out if you embrace life’s flow.
A bicuspid aortic valve is a heart condition where the aortic valve doesn’t form correctly during fetal development. Instead of having three flaps, it only has two because two of them fuse together.
While it can eventually lead to heart failure, symptoms of a bicuspid aortic valve often don’t appear until a person reaches adulthood, usually around middle age.
Daniel’s health battle came after he and Natalie revealed back in September they were engaged.
He proposed to Natalie, 28, during a romantic boat ride on the Hudson River. She was completely surprised when he got down on one knee and gave her a beautiful diamond engagement ring.
He posted a picture of the special moment on Instagram with the caption ‘Life is beautiful.’ Friends quickly shared the photo and commented with excited messages like ‘screaming crying’ and ‘so happy for you both – favorite people getting married!!’
Daniel and Natalie have been together for eight years, ever since they first met as students at Tulane University in New Orleans.
The couple, who are New York residents, had an engagement party on Saturday night. They celebrated with friends at a lively Irish pub in Manhattan.
Guests enjoyed custom cocktails made with De Nada Tequila, a brand co-founded by Daniel and Adam Millman. The drinks had fun, creative names like Tulane Bombshell, Wine Rita, Knit Nat Negroni, and Dingus Paloma.
Daniel posted a sweet video on his Instagram Stories showing him playfully sweeping Natalie into his arms for a kiss.
Guests were also spotted enjoying a flower-decorated white cake and sharing laughs with Natalie, who happily displayed her new engagement ring.
Daniel’s brother, Micheál Richardson, is also an actor, following in the footsteps of their well-known father. Daniel was just twelve years old when his mother passed away.
He shared a heartfelt message on the anniversary of her passing, writing that he anticipates being with her again someday. Until then, he finds comfort in feeling her presence with him always.
I really hope I’m making you proud. Honestly, I think you’d be thrilled with how good my margaritas are now! She was the absolute best – the original margarita queen, and I’m trying to carry on her legacy.
When I was younger, I’d always ask my mom for a taste of her drink, and she’d kindly tell me I had to wait until I was older. She had no idea that I’d eventually create my own tequila company and have plenty of margaritas whenever I wanted!
Natasha Richardson, known for playing Lindsay Lohan’s mother in ‘The Parent Trap’ alongside Dennis Quaid, came from a famous acting family. Her mother was Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave, her father was director Tony Richardson, and she had a sister, actress Joely Richardson.
While on a family vacation at the Mont Tremblant resort in Quebec, she fell while skiing on an easy slope during a private lesson.
Initially, she seemed okay, even making light of her fall and declining medical help. However, she soon developed a terrible headache and had to be taken to a hospital in Montreal, then transferred to New York for further care.
Two days later she was declared brain dead and taken off life support with Liam at her side.
