ILM, famous for its work on the original Star Wars, has a long history of creating groundbreaking effects for blockbuster films such as Back to the Future, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Twister, Harry Potter, Avatar, and numerous Marvel movies.

The visual effects in Battleship are remarkable because ILM focused on realism, seamlessly integrating the alien ships into actual footage. To convincingly show ships moving through the water and creating huge waves, they created groundbreaking water simulation technology. This allowed them to realistically depict millions of water droplets, foam, and mist at once, making the ocean scenes feel incredibly authentic.

The alien ships in Battleship were intentionally designed to appear both intimidating and intelligent, taking cues from the way water insects move. Image Engine’s work in bringing these biomechanical aliens to life – from their design to their animation – was particularly impressive. The visual effects in Battleship are remarkably well-done, standing up to comparisons with those in other science fiction films like Independence Day: Resurgence and beyond.

Despite impressive visual effects, the 2012 film Battleship wasn’t a major success with audiences.
