Liam Neeson’s new movie is now the most-watched film on Prime Video. The movie, directed by Akiva Schaffer, is a fresh take on the 1988 classic starring Leslie Nielsen and was released in theaters on August 1st.
After a successful run in theaters earning $102 million, The Naked Gun is now a hit on Prime Video, currently ranking as the most popular movie in the U.S. It’s performing better than newer releases this year, including Final Destination: Bloodlines, Sinners, and Playdate.
The film stars Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s famous character from the original Naked Gun movie. With Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Danny Huston also appearing, the story follows Drebin Jr. as he tries to crack a difficult murder case and rescue his police department. Expect plenty of laughs, slapstick comedy, and nods to the original films.
The recent success of The Naked Gun on streaming platforms comes after critics gave it very positive reviews. The movie currently has an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers highlighting its fast-paced humor and Liam Neeson’s unexpectedly funny performance as the lead.

In a review for ScreenRant, Zach Moser gave The Naked Gun a score of 8 out of 10. He praised the film for prioritizing laughs above a complex story or emotional depth, and especially highlighted a standout performance by Neeson. Moser noted:
Liam Neeson is the main reason to watch, and he brings a comedic energy we haven’t seen from him since his memorable appearance in the first episode of Ricky Gervais’ Life’s Too Short back in 2011. He plays it straight with a serious expression, which is impressive. Because he commits so fully to the role, even the cheesiest lines become genuinely funny.
The movie received a fairly average score of 72% on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, and ticket sales were similarly moderate. While comedies aren’t common in theaters these days, earning $102 million is a decent achievement. However, considering the film cost around $42 million to make, it might not have made enough money in theaters to cover its costs.
The fact that The Naked Gun is currently popular on Prime Video suggests it will likely do well with viewers at home, just like the original films. While the 2025 reboot didn’t make a huge profit in theaters, it probably did well enough that strong home video sales have made it a profitable venture.
Liam Neeson became well-known around the time of The Naked Gun, and remains a popular actor today. He frequently stars in action and thriller films, with recent examples including Ice Road: Vengeance (2025), Absolution (2024), and In the Land of Saints and Sinners (2023).
Liam Neeson, now 73, has said that while he may appear in a few more action films, his days as an action star are largely behind him. He doesn’t have any straight comedies planned after The Naked Gun, but he might explore different types of roles in the future.
