Liam and Noel's 30 years of High Flying insults! From brotherly backstabbing to slamming each other's wives and kids - will the warring siblings really manage to call a truce for their £50m Oasis reunion?

As a long-time fan of the iconic British band Oasis, I must say it’s heartbreaking to witness the bitter feud between Noel and Liam Gallagher. Having grown up listening to their music and being inspired by their rock ‘n’ roll attitude, it’s hard not to feel a pang of sadness every time I read about another tweet or statement that deepens this rift.

Last night at the Reading Festival, I extended an open hand, much like offering an olive branch, to my brother Noel Gallagher, in full view of the public.

At his main performance, he devoted the Oasis song “Half The World Away” to his distant sibling and hinted that a significant update concerning the band’s future would be shared on Tuesday at 8:00 am.

15 years ago this coming Wednesday, it will be marked as the day when Noel left Oasis, expressing significant relief, after a heated altercation backstage in Paris. He declared, “I had no choice but to stop working with Liam for another day.”

Established in the ’90s, this Britpop band gained immense popularity through songs such as Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back In Anger, and Stop Crying Your Heart Out. They eventually became one of the most prominent bands in the annals of British music.

Despite their contentious bond, the brothers Noel and Liam have managed to maintain their celebrity status far beyond the creation of their hit songs.

Before their upcoming meeting, TopMob reflects on the past three decades marked by backstage arguments, exit incidents, and heated Twitter exchanges.

April 1994

In 1994, during their initial tour across America, the first significant strains in their partnership became evident.

In 1994, a conversation between journalists John Harris and the brothers devolved into a 10-minute exchange of disrespectful remarks.

The chaos began with Liam discussing the band’s arrest on a ferry to Amsterdam, and their ‘rock and roll animal’ persona, only for Noel to interrupts him by saying:

If you take pride in being kicked off ferries, why don’t you switch your allegiance to West Ham and leave our band to focus on music instead of engaging in football hooliganism? After all, we are musicians, not football hooligans.

Later on, Liam advises Noel: “Perhaps it would be best if you took a seat. You seem agitated, and you’ve had quite a few gin and tonics.”

September 1994

During performances, Liam often altered the words of Noel’s tunes, aiming to provoke not only his sibling but also U.S. audiences.

At a highly tumultuous performance held at the iconic Whisky a Go Go in LA, Liam launched into hurling slurs at the band and even hurled a tambourine towards his sibling.

In a moment of disenchantment, I found myself taking a brief respite from my daily routine, seeking solace in the quietude. Upon my return, I channeled those emotions into the creation of “Talk Tonight,” a melody born from life’s experiences.

Summer 1995

During the making of their popular album “What’s The Story, Morning Glory?”, tensions rose so high that Noel wielded a cricket bat and struck it against Liam’s head. This very cricket bat was later auctioned off in 2011.

During a recording session, Liam left to go to a bar, which brought revelers into the studio when Noel was focusing on his work.

In a later interview, Noel reminisced that Liam seemed quite agitated. It appears someone discharged a fire extinguisher inside the farmhouse.

‘I think maybe one of my guitars got damaged, and I blamed him. […] I ended up having a proper fight with Liam. It might have been the biggest fight we ever had. I remember smashing his head in with a cricket bat.’

Instead of Liam’s account, the entire studio appeared to be shattered, with everything reduced to fragments.

It might have been my lack of concern, while he was struggling to compose the song ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. At that moment, I exclaimed, ‘Darn it, let’s give it a try!’

August 1996

Liam pulled out of Oasis’ MTV Unplugged performance at the last minute.

At that moment, Noel stated: “Liam won’t be joining us because he has a sore throat, which means you’re unfortunately stuck with the less-than-attractive quartet.”

However despite pulling out due to ‘illness’ he then proceeded to watch the whole show from the crowd, heckling his brother with a beer in hand.

May 2000

A tour in Spain saw a drunken altercation occur between the pair.

In response to Liam questioning the paternity of Noel’s child with Meg Matthews, Anais, Noel ended up physically attacking his brother, resulting in a split lip for Liam.

After departing the band for a second time, they wrapped up the remaining leg of their European tour without Noel’s participation.

October 2005

During a conversation with Spin magazine, it was Noel who was dishing out criticism, describing their conflicts as a form of psychological combat.

He understands his brother well, and he can manipulate their professional connection as skillfully as someone playing an almost forgotten arcade game. (He said this about his work dynamic with his sibling.)

As a devoted admirer, I’ve honed a unique skill – subtly guiding choices without causing a stir. I shape the decisions in a way that appears to be his own, yet it’s my influence at work. This is an artistic mastery I’ve cultivated over time.

As I navigate the journey of life, I’ve found that my connections remain constant, yet age gracefully. The heated exchanges of yesteryears, marked by harsh words and physical altercations, have given way to a subtler form of conflict – a psychological dance through media outlets.

April 2009

During an interview with Q Magazine, Noel made a well-known statement that goes something like this: “He is the most angry person you will ever come across. He’s akin to a person armed with a fork trying to navigate through a bowl of soup.”

Ten years after the initial quote was posted, Liam shared a video on Twitter of him consuming soup using a fork as a response.

In the video he posted to express gratitude for ticket sales to his tour, he jokingly said: “You’ve managed to make this supposedly grumpy fellow extremely joyful.”

August 2009

Following a decade and a half of disagreements and on-stage departures, the iconic band Oasis disbanded at their last performance in Paris during the Rock En Seine festival, following another heated backstage altercation.

According to reports an argument broke out, with Liam wielding Noel’s guitar around ‘like an axe’.

It was the last straw for the duo and the show was cancelled, along with the rest of the tour.

In simpler terms, Noel announced, “I chose to leave Oasis tonight, feeling a mix of sorrow and relief.”

“I found it impossible to continue collaborating with Liam any longer. Regardless of what others might write or say, my feelings were clear.”

A few days after another statement named ‘Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere’, Noel commented: ‘The specifics aren’t crucial, there are far too many to mention. However, I believe you deserve to be informed that the degree of verbal and physical threats against me, my loved ones, associates, and companions has become unbearable.’

In light of the disappointing absence of backing and empathy from my superiors and fellow musicians, I find myself compelled to don my cape once more and venture forth in search of fresh opportunities.

March 2011

Two years following their separation, Liam remained fiery regarding the band’s history, asserting emphatically, “I find it offensive that some believe Noel Gallagher has single-handedly sustained this band for the past 18 years.”

Following their separation, Liam formed a new band called Beady Eye, which included previous Oasis members Andy Bell, Gem Archer, and Chris Sharrock.

Before they called it quits in 2014, due to lackluster album sales, the group put out two albums, “Different Gear Still Speeding” and “BE,” after which their lead singer, Liam, decided to pursue a solo path.

Noel also went solo under the name Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, in 2011.

Yet, Liam didn’t avoid taking a jab and called them on Twitter the “Lofty Larks.” (Using a synonym for dig and a playful name to replace “High-Flying Turds”)

May 2015

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Noel expressed his thoughts on a possible Oasis reunion: “Well, we’re not together anymore. Haven’t you heard that before?”

It seems you may have disbanded your group, as I’ve heard through the grapevine. Indeed, that means the band no longer exists. Consequently, I have no plans to get involved moving forward. Should there be a reunion at some point, I won’t be participating in it.

Liam humorously responded, saying: “Once more, Noel Katie Hopkins Gallagher seems to be speaking nonsense. Maybe it’s time you cleaned your saxophone, chuckle.”

July 2016

Back in 2016, even I – a die-hard fan – couldn’t help but notice that the chasm between those legendary brothers hadn’t seemed to lessen one bit, not even with the unveiling of the captivating documentary film, Supersonic, which delved into the band’s history.

Regarding Noel attending the premiere, Liam shared that he wouldn’t expect him to show up, saying: “I’m afraid Noel isn’t coming.”

He lives in an extraordinarily large home, maybe indulging in tofu and facial treatments, wouldn’t that be fitting for such a public figure?

At about the same period, when Liam initially began using ‘potato’ as an insult towards his brother, he also asserted that Noel resembled a potato. He reinforced this claim by continuously sharing close-up photos of Noel as evidence.

May 2017

Instead of hosting a 50th birthday party for Noel without inviting Liam, it resulted in an unavoidable storm of tweets.

Liam shared that for Potato’s 50th, none of his family, including his own mother, were invited. This suggests a lot about the kind of person he is and his choice of friends or organizers, whom he called a ‘pair of w**kers.’

In a more thoughtful manner, I might express myself as follows:

Relations seemed to be thawing somewhat though as he also tweeted: ‘Happy 50th rkid stay young LG.’

In a later conversation, he clarified his reason for sending the message, stating, “Well, I had just woken up, you see, with everything that happened in Manchester on my mind. It struck me then: ‘I think I’ll go ahead and wish them a Happy Birthday.'”

Additionally, I felt it necessary to point out that he’s reached a certain age. You might recall his vast following of over a million and a half. It seemed surprising to some, as they exclaimed, “Wait, is he 50?” To which I responded, “Yes, indeed.”

Liam clarified, “You understand, right? I truly meant what I said. He’s not just anyone – he’s my brother. Despite our squabbles and petty disagreements, I genuinely hope the best for him.”

June 2017

Weeks after penning a heartfelt birthday greeting, I found myself once again caught in the whirlwind of my brother’s controversial comments. In the wake of the devastating Manchester terror attack that claimed 22 lives, I criticized Noel for his absence at the tribute concert held at Old Trafford.

In response, it was stated that Noel was abroad at the time, and he had already contributed the earnings from “Don’t Look Back In Anger” towards the aid fund for the affected individuals.

Liam expressed on Twitter: “I’m sorry Manchester that my brother wasn’t with us last night. I was truly disappointed. Keep shining and stay secure, LG x.”

Later, he commented: “Apparently Noels are out of the country. We all miss them so much, let’s get on a plane and perform for the children, you melancholic soul.”

August 2017

During an interview, Liam referred to Noel as a “betrayer of the working class” after learning that his brother had been attempting to speak with Brad Pitt backstage at Glastonbury.

Oh my goodness. He’s acting strangely, almost obsessively. “Hurry! Find me a celebrity!” It’s awkward, really. Celebrities like Bradley Cooper and the likes? Please take a seat, friend. Labeling oneself as working class yet acting this way is inconsiderate. Get on with it.

Later in the same interview, he accused Noel of ‘stitching me up’ during the Oasis split.

Here’s a more diplomatic way of expressing the sentiment: “He has certain challenges, as do I, and it seems we have differing opinions about each other. Let’s find a way to communicate more productively.”

1. Original: He deceitfully involved me in Oasis, but when things went wrong, I was the one who ended up taking the fall. He then abruptly decided he wanted a solo career, saying, “I don’t care about this anymore.”

1. ‘He cleverly arranged some dangerous traps, and unfortunately, I was caught in them. To put it mildly, I am not happy with him about this. In my opinion, he should leave me alone. It’s not that our relationship ended because we were in Paris and had an argument.’

‘You stitched me up and you can f**k off, you c**t. I’m your f**kin’ brother. People go, “Oh you’re jealous.” I’m not. I’m living in the f**kin’ real world. I’ve got my kids, I’ve got my rock’n’roll, I’ve got my vibe.

June 2019

In 2019, Noel expressed his personal feelings about the topic of an Oasis reunion through a column he wrote for Wired magazine. His words were: “If fans are eager to listen to old Oasis tunes, there’s a rotund fellow in an anorak who performs them somewhere, likely wearing shorts. So, they can go and enjoy that show. I have no intention whatsoever of getting back into the Oasis scene.”

August 2019

Two months on, Noel resurfaced in media outlets with a series of derogatory remarks during an interview with The Guardian. The title for this article read, “I admired my mother until she bore Liam.”

Speaking about Liam’s solo work, he mentioned: “I don’t enjoy listening to those albums due to his vocal style not appealing to me.”

However, I’ve been told it’s on the radio. I find the tunes simple, perhaps more for a casual audience. It seems to be created by an artist with a simpler approach, and he appears to be dictating straightforward compositions that mimic the style of Oasis.

It seems likely that if I leave my two boys, ages nine and eleven, together for approximately 45 minutes, they might come up with a creation that surpasses his recent release as their combined creativity is quite impressive.

November 2019

Discussion about a reunion surfaces following Noel Gallagher’s high-profile divorce worth around £20 million from his former spouse, Sara MacDonald, last year. It is rumored that the older Gallagher was convinced of the financial advantages in reuniting the band.

The improvement in relations between the siblings and Noel being unattached isn’t merely a coincidence; it’s worth noting that Liam has been openly critical of Sara, who Noel married just two years following Oasis’ breakup in 2009.

In 2019, Liam made a disrespectful comment about his sister-in-law as a reaction to Noel’s critique of his frequent online criticisms.

As a devoted admirer, I feel compelled to express my thoughts: “It’s her online behavior that’s causing quite a stir with Oasis fans, and it’s time she matures, considering she’s not far from her sixties. We all face criticism on social media, even my family isn’t immune to it. So, let’s not point fingers at each other here.”

Liam mentioned an offensive tweet by Sara where she insulted his parenting abilities, called him a disrespectful term, and hoped he would pass away before their children started using social media.

Sara reacted to Liam’s published interview where he expressed indifference towards being targeted with abuse online by Sara, Noel, or his daughter Anais.

On Instagram, Sara replied: “Your so-called son? Let me correct that, it’s your beautiful niece. I hope you won’t be around when my children start using social media, you despicable individual.”

As I was scrolling through my Twitter feed, I came across a series of angry posts by Liam. In one tweet, he wrote: ‘She expressed hope that I would die, I wonder if there’s a term for such individuals as I consult my dictionary.’ (sic)

During an interview with The Big Issue magazine, Noel remarked that his sibling acts foolishly by expecting forgiveness for consistently belittling his wife and accusing her of preventing the reuniting of their band due to her influence as a guitarist.

I found it peculiar when he expressed eagerness for me to call and discuss reunion plans, given how deeply invested he is in reviving Oasis. Yet, each tweet he posts seems to further diminish that possibility.

If for even a moment you imagine we’ll share a platform together, given your recent remarks, it seems to me that you may be underestimating your own intelligence.

A while after that, a fan posted on Twitter and addressed Liam by saying: “Hey Liam, I was wondering if you could explain why Noel seems to strongly dislike the idea of an Oasis reunion?”

Liam stated: “He’s been ready for it, but remember, someone is preventing him because they dislike Oasis music.”

April 2020

In a separate version, Noel shared a demo of the song “Don’t Stop,” featuring neither Liam’s vocals nor Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthur’s guitar licks. This led Noel’s brother to take to Twitter yet again.

If you plan on sharing old demo recordings, ensure that I am the one singing and Bonehead is playing the guitar. Otherwise, I don’t consider it valuable or worth paying attention to.

2021

2021 saw Noel disclose that it was him who ignited the long-standing conflict with his brother, resulting in their separation in 2009.

In 2009, prior to the launch of his brand Pretty Green, Liam generously handed over some clothing items to the Oasis rocker. However, instead of wearing them himself, he decided to donate them, still new, to a charity store.

In a conversation with The Matt Morgan Podcast, Noel recounted that his brother reacted dramatically, as if it was ‘the start of a catastrophic event’, when he found out that his clothes were displayed on a mannequin at Barnardo’s store, before the brand had even been officially launched.

Recounting the story, Noel mentioned: “Liam didn’t give me clothes alone; he gifted them to the entire band. Immediately, I took it to a charity shop and placed it by the entrance.”

‘He went f*****g mental. He said, ‘If you didn’t f*****g want it, you should have just said you didn’t f*****g want it, you c***.

A month before its release, an item was displayed on a mannequin at Barnardo’s. In hindsight, if things had to turn for the worse, that moment could be seen as the start of its downfall.

2022

Liam criticized Noel for reportedly preventing the use of Oasis tunes in Liam’s film project, Knebworth ’22.

As a devoted admirer, I was curious to know if any of the band’s iconic tunes would be included in their upcoming documentary. Well, I went ahead and asked Liam directly on Twitter, and here’s his reply:

1. ‘There are no Oasis songs here, because the petulant individual has barred them. He’s even blocked the Oasis song I performed for the Taylor Hawkins tribute. What a disrespectful small person he is.’
