Lex Luthor’s Demise & “Epic ‘Lord of the Rings'” Battle Detailed in Resurfaced ‘Justice League 2’ Storyboards

The discussion surrounding Zack Snyder and what his original plans for the DC Universe could have been continues to be popular. This is likely fueled by Snyder regularly posting behind-the-scenes content from his time working on DC films on Instagram, giving fans who still hope he’ll finish his story something to focus on.

Zack Snyder recently shared some behind-the-scenes looks at his work on the Justice League, including photos of the cast like Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, and Jason Momoa. He also revealed storyboard pages that were briefly shown online years ago before Warner Bros. took them down. These storyboards offer a clearer view of Snyder’s original plans for a Justice League 2, including how he envisioned a shocking death for Lex Luthor and a massive, world-uniting final battle.

The handwritten notes on the page describe a terrifying scene at the Batcave. Batman is horrified to see Darkseid completely control Superman, who then attacks him, though Batman manages to escape. Lex Luthor thinks he’s finally won, but confronts Superman, who turns on him with fiery red eyes, incinerating him. Lex’s screams fill the air as everything turns red…

The story then jumps forward five years, to a world now under Darkseid’s control. Later plans for the narrative hinted at an epic conclusion similar to The Lord of the Rings, where the Justice League would unite all of Earth’s allies to fight back against Darkseid’s invasion.

The SnyderVerse Is Over Whether Fans Accept It or Not

For nearly ten years, very few films have sparked the ongoing online conversation that surrounds Justice League. Every year, fans flood platforms like X with demands to see Zack Snyder’s original vision realized, to dismantle the current DC Universe plans led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and to get a sequel, Justice League 2, made.

Despite recent excitement fueled by Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a return to Zack Snyder’s original vision for a darker, more intense superhero universe – and the reunion of Henry Cavill and the Justice League cast – is highly unlikely. Although Snyder has worked with Netflix on films like Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead, the idea of the original team reforming remains a dream for fans and won’t be becoming reality.
