Lewiston-Auburn balloon festival celebrates with Star Wars theme

For decades, starting from the late 1970s, Star Wars’ unforgettable characters, music, and memorabilia have gained international acclaim. Nowadays, Star Wars Nights are a common occurrence at baseball matches. In Disney World and Disneyland, Galaxy’s Edge is a whole park dedicated to a distant galaxy. At numerous events like the upcoming L/A Balloon Festival in the northeast, Star Wars finds ways to blend into the festivities.

Beginning on Friday, August 15, the 31st annual Lewiston-Auburn Balloon Festival will unfold at Simard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston, Maine. This four-day event concludes on Sunday night and boasts a total of 18 balloons participating in various launches throughout. Among these, you’ll find the iconic Yoda and Darth Vader balloons as part of the festival’s specialty balloons, fitting with the theme “The Ascension of Balloons.

Every year, the L/A Balloon Festival spans over three days and offers a variety of activities for all attendees – including parades, food options, hot air balloon rides, and additional fun experiences. During both mornings and evenings of the event, there are multiple balloon launches occurring, giving visitors the chance to witness the reveal of various balloons throughout the festival’s duration.

At the festival, as detailed by Balloon Profiles, both Darth Vader, known as “Darth,” and Yoda are distinctive balloon forms flown by Lambert Benoit and Benoit Lambert individually. Additional unique shapes feature Spyder Pig and Bettie Jean The Butterfly. The rest of the balloons share a common shape but come in various colors, each with a name that’s sure to bring a smile to your face (and to the balloons themselves as well).

As the summer season starts to fade, it’s not hard to feel a bit nostalgic for our cherished space epic. Whether Maine feels like a galaxy too far for a weekend escape or not, take a peek at your local events calendar – there might be Star Wars trivia sessions, costume competitions, lightsaber dueling workshops, or food events themed around the Force. No matter where you are, you’re bound to find fellow fans nearby!

As a festival enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the event itself is complimentary! If you happen to be in Lewiston-Auburn this weekend, you’d be missing out on a lot of fun if you skip it. However, do keep in mind that certain activities like balloon rides, food vendors, and other merchants might have their own charges when you enter. For more details, I’d recommend checking out the L/A Balloon Festival website to stay informed. Enjoy the festivities!
