Lewis Hamilton Honors Black Style at Met Gala: Now We’re Seen

Lewis Hamilton recently took to social media to share a heartfelt message, thanking everyone involved following his role as a co-chair at this year’s Met Gala.

On Monday night, the British Formula One racer, aged 40, swapped his sleek white suit and coordinating beret for a relaxed navy ensemble before attending Richard Akiva’s party at Casa Cipriani.

The 40-year-old British Formula One driver changed out of his smart white suit and beret into a less formal navy suit, heading to Richard Akiva’s party at Casa Cipriani on Monday evening.

Before heading out for a night of partying, the sports star first turned to Instagram for reflection on this year’s theme. As he penned his thoughts, he expressed: ‘Now we are noticed.’

2021’s topic centered around ‘Exquisite: Crafting Elegant Black Fashion,’ drawing inspiration from Monica Miller’s creative endeavors, encompassing her book titled “Fashion and the Styling of Black Dandyism within the Black Diaspora.

In the extended message he composed, Lewis expressed difficulty finding the right words to convey his feelings about serving as co-chair for this year’s Met.

2021’s theme resonates with regality, spirituality, and the divine symbolism of embellishment. Items such as ivory and cowrie shells are not merely aesthetically pleasing; they hold ancestral history. They serve as symbols of identity, safety, and reverence.

He went on expressing his heartfelt gratitude towards the Costume Institute at The Met, Grace Wales Bonner, the remarkable co-chairs, and all those who uphold the legacy of the Black Dandy.

‘We’ve always been here. We’ve always been fly. And now, we’re seen.’

Lewis exuded elegance, dressed in a smart, crisp white double-breasted suit and a coordinating beret, creating quite a stir as he confidently struck poses on the azure carpet.

The star sported a striking white ensemble featuring boucle accents, complemented by a gold-embellished beret of the same hue.

The driver of the Ferrari sported several large rings and wore a set of earrings adorned with diamonds.

In his Instagram post, Lewis acknowledged and expressed gratitude towards Grace Wales Bonner, the designer, stating, “As soon as I learned about this year’s Met Gala theme, I felt drawn to collaborate with Grace @walesbonner.

This appearance is the result of several months of extensive study and creative thinking. Each element has been meticulously thought through, infusing it with a great deal of feeling and significance.

As I slip into this garment, I’m not just donning a suit; I’m embracing my heritage. It exudes style, spirit, and an edge that’s as sharp as the finest blade. A heartfelt thank you, Grace, for crafting such a timeless piece.

Each year, an occasion arranged by Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor-in-chief, honors the Costume Institute’s spring display. This year’s exhibit focuses on the influential blend of politics and aesthetics within the cultural phenomenon of Black dandyism.

The showcase, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, opens to the public on May 10 until October 26.

The concept hinges on Monica L. Miller’s 2009 publication, “Slaves to Fashion”: an exploration of Black Dandyism and the fashioning of Black Diasporic identity.

The theme showcases the journey of African Americans, moving from a state of bondage where they were portrayed as expensive trinkets symbolizing wealth and social standing, to independent creators who set trends globally.

Alongside Lewis, actor Colman Domingo, hip-hop artist A$AP Rocky, and multi-talented figure Pharrell Williams (who is also the men’s creative director at Louis Vuitton) took on their roles as co-chairs.

In another role, basketball legend LeBron James served as the honorary head, but regrettably had to miss the occasion because of a knee injury.

This year’s honorary chair, the NBA’s record-breaking scorer, mentioned that his wife, Savannah James, would represent him instead.

Due to a knee injury I sustained at the end of the season, I regretfully won’t make it to the Met Gala in NY tonight, despite all the well-wishes and congratulations from many people. – James, 40, shared this on X, mere hours before the Met Gala red carpet event.
