LeVar Burton says there was a "sense of incompletion" after Star Trek: Nemesis

As a die-hard Star Trek fan who has been following the adventures of Captain Picard and his crew since their maiden voyage in 1987, I must say that the reunion in Star Trek: Picard’s third season was nothing short of a dream come true. It felt like we were given an eighth season or a final movie, long overdue after the disappointing ending of Star Trek: Nemesis.

Star Trek: Nemesis served as the final original film in the Star Trek: The Next Generation series, leaving viewers and cast members with a sense of underwhelming conclusion rather than a grand finale. Many felt dissatisfied with how the story concluded, unaware that it would be the last film. This was due to the unexpected poor performance of the movie at the box office. For quite some time, that was the last we encountered the crew of The Next Generation together.

Star Trek: Picard’s third season reunited almost all of the original cast members, along with a few special guests, creating an experience reminiscent of The Next Generation’s eighth season or final film. In a chat with TVLine (via Trekmovie), LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge) shared the immense joy they all felt about coming together again and their profound gratitude for the opportunity.

I think that for all of us, the feeling was overwhelmingly one of gratitude for the experience, for having had the chance to come back and really finish what we started in a good way. When we shot the last movie [Star Trek: Nemesis], we didn’t know it was going to be our last movie. And so there was a sense of incompletion. So to be able to come back and close the circle and perhaps start a new one was really satisfying for all of us… for all of us. It was amazing! I can’t even describe to you what it’s like when we are all together. It’s like the universe is right. When we are in the presence of one another, everything is right with the world.

LeVar Burton

When Burton mentions “let’s start another [circle],”, he’s alluding to the possibility of Star Trek: Legacy, a project he hasn’t abandoned. During that same interview, the actor made clear his ongoing interest in Legacy. In fact, this enthusiasm remains vibrant almost two years since Picard concluded.

Burton shared the sentiment felt by numerous fans and actors, recognizing that Legacy simply feels appropriate. Not every fan agrees, as some desire a fresh start with new characters, new environments, and novel concepts. However, for many of us, it’s clear that there are still countless tales to be spun using these characters we first encountered in 1987, and there’s no justification for not continuing to explore their stories.
