Leslie Mann’s daughter Maude Apatow set back as her directorial debut full of nepo babies runs into money trouble

This year was supposed to be extremely exciting for nepo baby Maude Apatow. 

The 28-year-old actress is known for her role in the popular show Euphoria and is set to appear in its third season. She was also planning to make her first film as a director with a movie called Poetic License, which was scheduled for release in May.

According to Deadline, Maude is now seeking a new distributor for the film because Row K can no longer meet its contractual obligations regarding the film’s acquisition.

The publication initially reported the movie was purchased for about $7 million, but that figure now appears to be inaccurate.

Originally planned for a May release, shortly after the April debut of Euphoria, it’s now scheduled to come out in October.

The company is facing difficulties after its latest film, ‘Dead Man’s Wire’ with Bill Skarsgård and Al Pacino, earned only $2.2 million in the United States, which is considered a poor result.

Row K reportedly invested $10 million total – $5 million for the rights to distribute their film in North America and another $5 million on marketing, all in preparation for the Oscars.

Christopher Woodrow and Raj Singh of Row K announced on Friday that the launch of their game, Dead Man’s Wire, is helping them learn and improve their approach as a new company entering a tough market.

As with many new companies, we initially focused on launching a lot of projects quickly. Now, we’re slowing down and being more strategic – focusing on projects with the best chance of success, improving how we operate internally, and making sure our team is structured to support these goals.

Despite launching just eight months ago, Row K is reportedly facing financial difficulties, including unpaid bills, according to Variety.

Several sources indicated the company is facing growing cash flow problems, with reports that vendors and consultants haven’t received payments in months. This has led to significant disruptions in ongoing work.

Maude’s new project features several actors who benefited from having famous parents or family connections, a practice often called nepotism.

Maude, who started her acting career at age seven in her father’s film The 40-Year-Old Virgin, is now preparing to direct her first movie.

In 2022, the Euphoria actress unexpectedly became a topic of conversation online after someone on X (formerly Twitter) was surprised to discover her parents were also well-known celebrities.

The popular tweet sparked a wave of people online sharing examples of celebrities who come from privileged backgrounds. In fact, New York magazine even declared 2022 ‘The Year of the Nepo Baby’.

Maude is one of many celebrities with famous parents who recently appeared on the magazine’s cover, which playfully noted she inherited both her mother’s looks and her mother’s agent.

The actress has admitted she was upset by the negative reaction, telling Net-a-Porter that it initially bothered her. However, she tries not to dwell on it, recognizing how fortunate she is.

Many others in my situation have succeeded, so I need to stay focused and continue producing quality work.

Maude got her start in movies thanks to her father, appearing in his films like Knocked Up (2007), Funny People (2009), and This Is 40 (2012) when she was a child.

The films also starred her mother Leslie and sister Iris.  

Maude went on to star in Euphoria, while Iris appeared on the Netflix series Love. 

Last year, Maude and director Olivia Rosenbloom started a film and television production company called Jewel Productions.

Their first project is the movie Poetic License, and they’re already planning to make two more films after that.

In 2025, several films—including After the Hunt, The Smashing Machine, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, and Christy—failed to find an audience in theaters.

In addition A24’s Marty Supreme failed to scoop any Oscars at this year’s ceremony.  

We’ll have to wait and see who directs Maude’s first film, which means aspiring actors with famous parents will have to hold off on their next big-screen appearance for a while.
