The popular BBC drama Sherwood, featuring Lesley Manville and David Morrissey, has announced its cast for season three. This season will center around a new family and is highly anticipated by viewers.
Set in a struggling mining village in Nottinghamshire, the show’s first season (released in 2022) revolves around two murders. The second season, which came out in 2024, centers on a violent turf war and another unexplained killing.
The popular drama, created by James Graham, will be back for a third season later this year. The original cast – including Manville, Morrissey, Lorraine Ashbourne, Lindsay Duncan, Robert Glenister, Robert Lindsay, and Claire Rushbrook – are all returning.

The new season will also feature some fresh cast members, including Rosalie Craig, Joe Dempsie, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Sue Johnston, and Peter Wight, who have all been confirmed as regulars.
Filming for the new season is already underway, and it will focus on the Wood family. They’re being portrayed as a hardworking, respectable family who are well-loved and active members of their community.
I’m really impressed with Zoe Craig – she’s such a dedicated advocate for her town! And her husband, Alex Dempsie, is managing the building of this huge new housing estate called Gotham, which is pretty cool – it’s being built right near Sherwood Forest, can you believe it?

Detective Inspector Zara Gill is heading up the investigation after remains were found in the reservoir. One of the bodies has been identified as a person who went missing more than 40 years ago.
The story follows the Wood and Bostall families as they’re compelled to confront their past, and current events begin to reveal long-hidden secrets affecting both the family and their community.
Graham, the creator of Dear England and Quiz, explained that what he enjoys most about the new season of Sherwood is adding fresh characters with compelling stories, while also continuing the journeys of the characters and actors he’s come to appreciate.
The Woods are a funny and relatable family, but we’re about to throw them into a truly unbelievable situation – the most challenging one we’ve ever designed.

According to executive producer Juliette Howell, the new season will explore important themes of community, loyalty, and justice. Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, highlighted Graham’s writing as both captivating and full of surprises.
Since it began, Sherwood has received widespread critical acclaim, being called one of the best TV dramas in recent years. Currently, 96% of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are positive across its first two seasons.
Sherwood season 3 has no release date.
