Lenny Kravitz dedicates 2024 MTV VMA to late mother Roxie Roker
As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for music and personal history, I find Lenny Kravitz’s journey to be nothing short of inspiring. His ability to maintain a successful career spanning over three decades while honoring his late mother Roxie Roker is truly commendable. It’s heartwarming to see an artist who uses his platform not just for self-promotion, but also as a tribute to those who have walked with him on his journey.
At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, Lenny Kravitz reminisced about his late mother, Roxie Roker, as he accepted the award for Best Rock Video for his song “Human”.
The 60-year-old musician-composer reminisced over three decades past as he accepted his awards at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, a venue they both visited back in 1993, along with Roker who tragically passed away from cancer at age 66 in December of 1995.
Overwhelmed by amazement, I find myself expressing profound gratitude. Thirty-one years ago, my mom and I shared a momentous occasion at the VMAs, and it’s to her that I humbly dedicate this achievement.
‘I thank God for this journey, this incredible journey. I thank Jesus for life.’
Known primarily for her portrayal of Helen Willis on The Jeffersons, Roker has graced various television series such as All in the Family, Fantasy Island, A Different World, 227, and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, among others.
The four-time Grammy winner had been nominated against a cadre of music stalwarts in the category.
In this collection, you’ll find Bon Jovi (a legendary band), Coldplay (often reminiscent of falling in love), Green Day (facing a dilemma), Kings of Leon (with their iconic song “Mustang Sprung”), and U2 (from the Atomic City).
The artist behind popular tunes like “Again,” “Can’t Get You Out of My Mind,” and “Let Love Rule” also expressed gratitude towards his crew and the director of the music video for “Human,” Joseph Kahn.
On Wednesday, the multitalented performer-thespian teamed up with Quavo and guitarist Craig Ross on stage, delivering a performance featuring remixed versions of Fly Away, Human, and Are You Gonna Go My Way.
Last week, Kravitz paid tribute to his deceased mother on social media by sharing an old video of himself from a 1993 event.
31 years ago, Kravitz was grateful to have his mother with him at his first VMAs, an experience he’ll forever treasure. Now, as he prepares to perform again after all these years, he knows she’ll be close to his heart.
Kravitz announced on Wednesday that his upcoming residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas starting next month will be a celebration of life, music, love, and rock ‘n’ roll.
He added, ‘We’ve been on tour. We started this summer in Europe, so this show is together. We’re there to amplify love.
I am here to share and receive energy with you, an experience that feels incredibly liberating. It’s more than just a performance; it’s about the flow of energy and the exchange of affection. And, of course, it includes all our popular tunes!
Kravitz earlier this year released his 12th studio album, titled Blue Electric Light.
In a conversation with the magazine about his work, he shared that he performs whatever instrument is required for each song. Additionally, Craig Ross contributes by playing the guitar on several tracks as well.
I’ve consistently followed this method in my work. In essence, I consider myself as someone who paints, or a painter. I create art not just with visual mediums, but with sounds… My influences have been great artists like Stevie Wonder and Prince, so I belong to their artistic lineage.
