Good Cop/Bad Cop is back on the streaming charts just two days after becoming available. This police show, which has a cozy small-town feel, is a great choice for anyone who enjoys Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and stars Leighton Meester in a comedic role.
Good Cop/Bad Cop quickly climbed the charts on HBO Max this week, landing at number ten in the U.S. on October 2nd (according to FlixPatrol). The series stars Clancy Brown (The Penguin), Devon Terrell (Barry), and Luke Cook (Dollface), and follows Lou Hickman (Meester), an experienced detective who is the only member of a small-town police force. Things get complicated when Lou’s father, Hank (Brown), who is also the Police Chief, brings in Lou’s younger brother, Henry (Cook), to help out. The show originally premiered on The CW in February and, despite receiving positive reviews, didn’t get the attention it deserved.
Despite some initial progress, Good Cop/Bad Cop is still having trouble gaining a large audience. The show had briefly started to gain more attention, but it fell out of the Top 10 most-watched series on October 3rd.
Meester explained that Good Cop/Bad Cop is a unique blend, similar to a combination of Twin Peaks and Gilmore Girls – she called it “a lively, chatty, and feel-good mix of two different types of shows.” She shared with TV Insider that the show, which focuses on the [Hickman] family, creates a small-town, Pacific Northwest atmosphere with a murder mystery at its heart, all unfolding within a sheriff’s department. She added that it’s a world she’d love to be a part of, filled with unusual and interesting characters and stories. This idea clearly appeals to both reviewers and viewers, as the series received approval ratings of 90% and 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively.
Good Cop/Bad Cop puts a fresh spin on the classic buddy cop formula, focusing on the complicated relationship between brothers Lou and Henry. Their boss, Hank, adds another layer of tension, and their personal issues often affect the cases they investigate. According to Meestar, “Lou is generally the ‘good’ cop and Henry the ‘bad’ – but those roles aren’t fixed, and what ‘good’ and ‘bad’ even *mean* is up for debate.”
Clancy Brown Plays to His Strengths in Good Cop/Bad Cop
In Lost, The Flash, Daredevil, The Punisher, The Penguin and SpongeBob SquarePants (playing Mr. Krabs), Brown brings a unique seriousness to the role of Big Hank in Good Cop/Bad Cop; Hank is also mixed up in some minor illegal activities. Determined to make his police department look good, Hank consistently manipulates crime statistics by changing the town’s boundaries. He also frequently does favors for people he knows, but always expects something in return.
Playing Hank was a refreshing change of pace after the roles I’ve had for the past couple of years,” Brown explained to the Los Angeles Daily News. “While the show does have some darker moments, as you’ll see, it’s not overwhelmingly dark. It’s a complex, human, and enjoyable story. It was also a bit of a challenge for me – it’s not really the type of role I usually take on. But I had a great view of Leighton and Luke’s performances and really enjoyed working with everyone.
Meester explained that Hank’s conflicted morals stem from a desire to do good. “He wants people to *believe* their town is perfect, and he sees himself as a protective father figure, ensuring everyone feels safe and secure,” she said. “Lou understands that’s a comforting idea, but when crime occurs, it forces a difficult choice: be honest or cover it up. Generally, Hank prefers to keep things secret, but occasionally, the truth inevitably comes out.”
Season 1 concluded with a major cliffhanger: Lou and Henry become suspicious about an old case and confront Big Hank, who reveals a disturbing secret. “As we learn more about the family, we discover everyone has been committing small offenses against one another,” Brown explained. This development raises the stakes for Season 2, which hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
Good Cop/Bad Cop is streaming on HBO Max.
