LEGO’s Nightmare Before Christmas set is a spooktacular treat for fans

As a seasoned LEGO builder and a die-hard fan of Tim Burton’s masterpiece, “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” I must say that this latest LEGO set has left me utterly spellbound! Building it was no easy feat, especially when Jack’s crooked grin seemed to sneer at me from the pile of bricks as I grappled with its intricate moments.

As Halloween approaches, it seems particularly fitting that LEGO reveals its latest creation based on The Nightmare Before Christmas from the LEGO Ideas line.

This 2,193-piece construction set was conceptualized by British LEGO enthusiast Simon Scott. It features three distinct settings from the film: Spiral Hill, Jack Skellington’s residence, and Halloween Town Hall.

It has been added to the LEGO Ideas collection alongside the recently-introduced sets like the one based on “Jaws,” as well as the Sanderson Sisters’ cottage from “Hocus Pocus” and the “Home Alone” house.

To celebrate its launch and being an ardent fan of the film, I managed to obtain the latest Nightmare Before Christmas collection and assembled it, humming tunes like ‘This Is Halloween’ and ‘What’s This?’ simultaneously as I enjoyed watching the movie again during the process.

LEGO Nightmare Before Christmas features

The LEGO Nightmare Before Christmas construction kit includes a total of 2,193 components, distributed among 16 different bags. There’s also a unique moon piece specifically designed for the Spiral Hill scene in this set.

You have the option to showcase each of the three areas independently, but they join as one expansive Halloween Town backdrop that spans 51 cm in width and 27 cm in depth. Among them, Jack Skellington’s house stands tallest at a height of 32 cm.

This set includes six miniature characters: Jack Skellington, Sally, Santa Claus, along with Lock, Shock, and Barrel. Additionally, you’ll find Zero the dog and a brick-constructed figure of The Mayor. The Mayor comes equipped with a double-sided head. Lock, Shock, and Barrel have their own brick-built bath tub on wheels for display.

It’s possible that enthusiasts could feel let down by the omission of characters like Oogie Boogie and Dr. Finkelstein, who were part of the initial LEGO Ideas proposal. However, LEGO Ideas creative lead Jordan David Scott recently shared the rationale for their exclusion, as reported by Brick Fanatics last month.

“[The Oogie Boogie character] is quite well-known, but surprisingly, he doesn’t show up in any of the depicted scenes. It felt somewhat strange not seeing the Town Hall with The Mayor present.”

We felt comfortable discussing the matter with Simon, and shared that we would be excluding Dr. Finkelstein from the project, but instead, we plan to feature The Mayor.

You can easily reenact the film’s scenes with a wide range of options for the characters, plus there are numerous spots where you can position them. However, I find it puzzling why one would place Jack and Sally anywhere other than atop Spiral Hill.

LEGO Nightmare Before Christmas build: How many times can you rewatch the movie?

To create an engaging atmosphere while constructing the new set, I decided to play “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. If you’d like to replicate this experience when building your own set, you can purchase the 4K Blu-ray on Amazon or stream it in 4K on Disney+.

Since Henry Selick’s timeless stop-motion masterpiece clocks in at just 80 minutes, I knew I’d need to rewatch it several times as I assembled the 2,193-piece model. Given my commitment to the task and considering that I’ve watched it on almost every Halloween and Christmas for over two decades, a few extra viewings seemed insignificant.

In constructing the sets for the movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas“, you’re free to build them in any sequence, but I chose to follow LEGO’s recommended order, starting with the Town Hall, then moving on to Jack’s house, and concluding with Spiral Hill last.

There are 427 steps in total with the entire build taking me just over five hours and 20 minutes, enough time for four-and-a-bit watches of the movie. I had barely got past ‘Jack’s Lament’ in my fifth watch when I put the final touch on the Spiral Hill set.

This LEGO set isn’t suitable for beginners because it has numerous complex parts that require careful attention to the bricks rather than the movie. There were instances where I struggled and even swore when I accidentally placed a brick incorrectly, causing several others to be misaligned, forcing me to start from scratch.

The Spiral Hill set can be somewhat fragile while adding the finishing touches, and unfortunately, I accidentally snapped a few parts. However, it was straightforward to mend since it’s the tiniest among the three locations.

In the long run, everything proves worthwhile because this masterpiece, with its uncanny resemblance to the movie’s crooked architectural structures and curvaceous trees, is truly awe-inspiring. Some parts are repeated intentionally for effect, but the design, crafted by LEGO, demonstrates genius, making the time invested commensurate with the final product.

Just as one would anticipate with LEGO sets, there are numerous intricate details for enthusiasts, including Jack’s Christmas lab setup in his home, replica tombstones reminiscent of those seen in the film, and a countdown to Christmas displayed on Town Hall.

The issue, if any, lies in the abundance of stickers compared to the printed bricks in the latest Jaws set. However, this is just a small concern as the placement of these stickers is straightforward.

Additionally, you could strip off the tops of both the Town Hall and Jack’s residence to uncover their interiors. Notably, the rear sides of these structures are exposed, allowing for a clear view of specific details like the lectern within the Town Hall.

The three groups fit harmoniously, but they’re quite fragile, particularly because the roof sections don’t have a fixed position and merely rest; thus, it would be prudent to handle each location individually and reconnect them after deciding on their placement.

With this collection, you have the flexibility not to showcase every piece simultaneously, as each location shines independently. Yet, when combined, they create an impressive ensemble.

LEGO Nightmare Before Christmas verdict

Any fan of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” would find it challenging not to be satisfied with this LEGO set, as it meticulously replicates the film’s settings in their characteristic off-kilter and peculiar grandeur.

If space is limited for your display, this set offers versatility. However, if you combine all three locations, you’ll miss out on a visually stunning, eerie effect. Building it demands attention at certain stages, but a seasoned LEGO builder shouldn’t find it overly challenging. The final outcome will make the effort seem worthwhile.

One of the top LEGO launches this year is truly exceptional, serving as an outstanding homage to one of the greatest Halloween or Christmas films ever made. If capturing Sandy Claws is what it takes to secure the set, then by all means, go for it!
