LEGO’s new Jaws set is a must-have for fans

As a seasoned LEGO enthusiast and self-proclaimed Jaws connoisseur, let me tell you about my latest adventure: building the LEGO Jaws set! Now, I’ve seen that shark more times than I care to remember, but there’s just something exhilarating about recreating it brick by brick.

It looks like you’ll require a larger display case now, because LEGO has introduced a new Jaws set, replicating the famous shark scene from the original movie in a 90-second mini version, which they unveiled on July 4 (naturally!).

The latest addition to the LEGO Ideas collection, the new set, was initially brainstormed by enthusiast Johnny Campbell. It stands alongside other sets inspired by films, such as the Sanderson Sisters’ abode from _Hocus Pocus_ and the house from _Home Alone_.

Without a doubt, is the latest Jaws collection essential for enthusiasts like me? Eagerly, I acquired the new set, listening to John Williams’ memorable soundtrack while re-watching Jaws, creating a deeply engaging atmosphere as I constructed it.

If you’re not a fan of “Jaws”, we have a great alternative for you! Check out our top picks for Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, and just general LEGO sets, as well as the best deals available.

LEGO Jaws features

As a seasoned LEGO enthusiast who has built countless sets over the years, I can say with confidence that the new LEGO Jaws set is a true masterpiece. With its impressive 1,497 pieces spread across 13 bags (now in LEGO’s sustainable paper bags), this set promises an engaging and rewarding building experience. The four base pieces being packaged separately for the final stages of construction adds to the anticipation and excitement of completing the iconic shark. I can hardly wait to dive into this set and bring the terrifying Jaws to life in my own home!

Displayed side-by-side, this collection reaches a maximum height of 35cm, with the Orca’s mast being its tallest point. The base itself stretches 59cm across and is 20cm deep. However, consider arranging the boat and shark individually to conserve space.

In addition to the LEGO Jaws set, you’ll find mini-figures of characters like Police Chief Martin Brody, Marine Biologist Matt Hooper, and Shark Hunter Sam Quint. These figures come accompanied by a selection of items such as a harpoon, fishing rod, and camera.

You can effortlessly replicate any scene from the classic movie “Jaws”, regardless of whether the overall appearance of the set is modeled after the third act confrontation between Bruce and the Orca team, as there’s ample diversity to do so.

LEGO Jaws build: How many times can you rewatch Jaws?

While constructing one of cinema’s most renowned sharks and its emblematic boat, it seems fitting to revisit the classic movie “Jaws” during the process. This is not just for hearing the legendary John Williams’ theme that instills a feeling of danger and urgency, but also to help immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the film while working on these iconic elements.

The model is constructed in three distinct parts: the boat section, a base (including the tail) for Bruce, and lastly, Bruce’s body. You can either display Bruce separately by connecting his body to the tail or, after constructing the base using bags 12 and 13, you can join Bruce’s body to the base.

As a gamer, I found myself embarking on an intricate Orca build that spanned across 374 steps in total. One viewing of Jaws nudged me close to wrapping up the main structure, excluding finer details like Quint’s fishing chair on the deck. However, a second viewing of Jaws extended my project almost to the very end of the entire build.

As I was meticulously adding each detail to my base, an intricate task with numerous identical components, all of a sudden, poor Bruce suffered his second explosion in the midst of my LEGO construction.

Instead, you might opt for a third viewing of the film, but I decided to simply enjoy the behind-the-scenes documentary marking the 4K re-release’s 45th anniversary instead.

In total, construction time was approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes, averaging about 20 minutes per bag. However, certain sections required more time due to the delicate nature of some components, particularly those at the bottom of the boat, where extra caution was needed to avoid damaging parts.

The construction process is typically simple, even for Bruce, however, the boat comes with intricate details. For instance, certain components like the mast can seem quite delicate, so be prepared to replace some parts, even if you exercise extreme care throughout the building process.

It’s worth it though as the set has been immaculately designed to be a near-perfect replica of the boat from Jaws. There are still the fun LEGO details you expect too, including a newspaper that’s already reporting on the Orca shark attack.

For LEGO enthusiasts, it’s delightful to find that although the set still requires some stickers for certain aspects, it also includes numerous printed bricks, like the Orca nameplate, which lend a more striking and professional appearance compared to a traditional sticker (and no more concerns about perfectly aligning it in the center of the brick).

You could choose to take off the cabin’s roof for a comprehensive view of its interior, although after adding the mast and rigging, it becomes somewhat challenging. Fortunately, the cabin has large windows that can be fully opened, providing a clear view of the inside.

Here’s an earlier photo during the build before the roof goes on so you can see the detail:

After both the boat and Bruce have been constructed, you can exhibit them side by side. However, it’s important to note that the boat simply sits atop its base, positioned over a strategically placed round brick in the corner, instead of being affixed or attached to it.

To arrange everything neatly, you might start by setting the base (the part where the shark will be attached) first, followed by positioning the boat slightly diagonally on top of it.

After completion, feel free to unleash your creativity by reenacting Quint’s grisly end or experiment with various LEGO mini-figures within the setup.

In a moment that brought a grin to my face perhaps unexpectedly, I found myself pondering if the character of Gollum (from the Barad-dûr location) might enjoy fishing for some tasty fish instead.

LEGO Jaws verdict

Although priced at £129.99, this LEGO _Jaws_ set is a must-buy for fans of the movie due to its exceptional recreation of the climactic scene with remarkable detail. It’s worth noting that it is cheaper compared to previous movies-themed Ideas sets.

The flexibility of this set is an extra advantage since it looks stunning when arranged together, yet you can exhibit Bruce individually for a more spectacular view. On another note, the lack of a stable base in the design might make it challenging to showcase the boat on its own.

During the construction process, there may be instances when you wish it were a little more straightforward, but nothing presented here should unduly trouble a seasoned LEGO craftsman. However, the final product’s appeal makes any inconvenience worthwhile.
