LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy's writers discuss the Alternate Universe

As a dedicated Star Wars fan who’s spent countless hours poring over comics, novels, and movies, I must say that the latest LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy miniseries has truly captured my heart! The creative twists they’ve given to our beloved characters are nothing short of genius.

Over time, the Star Wars storyline has undergone numerous changes. In the early 2000s, the Star Wars: Infinities comics introduced characters like Imperial Leia, Jedi Leia, and a Rebel Alliance Darth Vader. Jan Ors from the Star Wars Legends series bears a strong resemblance to Jyn Erso in her mission to steal Death Star plans. There have been numerous alterations to stories I particularly enjoy, such as those involving the X-wing pilots.

In the four-part mini-series titled “LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy“, viewers will witness the aftermath of a total cosmic transformation. According to Gizmodo, the series creatively reimagines planets, vehicles, and technology as fun, child-friendly combinations of existing designs and ideas. Neither the villains nor the heroes are immune to the changes brought about by this “new world,” and writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit spoke with the site about the creative process behind it.

When questioned about superiors discouraging creative suggestions, Samit stated it wasn’t something entirely unheard of. “It was more like a lively tribute to everything Lego Star Wars, which essentially meant we had our fun with every character imaginable.” Hernandez commented, “Benji and I aimed to come up with an inter-galactic explanation for why the history of this universe varied for each character, each planet, and each spacecraft.

Two characters who often found themselves manipulated for their own ends were Rey Skywalker and Rose Tico. In “The Rise of Skywalker,” hints of Rey’s dark capabilities surfaced, but it strains credulity to imagine Rose working towards evil. Hernandez explains that the Darth Tico character was born from a single incident.

I love that character [Rose] and I love, love, love Kelly Marie Tran and she is just the most incredible performer. And I wanted to see more. I wanted to see more nuance… Her sister dies in ‘The Last Jedi,’ right? Right at the beginning. And she takes the path of compassion and empathy. But not everybody does. And there was not guarantee that that’s how she would have ended up. And so that was a really interesting place to begin to say: what does a dark version of this character who has had a lot of suffering occur, what path does that set her on?

Additionally, a popular fan theory suggests that Darth Jar Jar Binks, known for his comical nature, might actually be the Sith Lord. Initially, Samit anticipated resistance to this idea. However, Disney argued that if there was ever an opportunity to make such a transformation, it would be now.

In the recent changes, the Jedi find themselves in an unfamiliar situation. As Hernandez puts it, “The Jedi we know aren’t the exalted Knights on pedestals anymore. Instead, they seem to be in a more humble, struggling state.

A key aspect of the miniseries revolves around the notion that while the universe might need a new beginning, it shouldn’t be restored to its original state. Hernandez pondered, “Restarting everything like a video game wouldn’t be truthful or fulfilling,” instead emphasizing that life presents us with two choices: either progress or being frozen by our circumstances. The underlying message is that although you may not have full control over life’s events, you do have the power to decide how you respond to them.
