Legendary TV Composer Behind X-Files and Blue Bloods Passes Away at 78
On Friday, July 4, Mark Snow, famed for composing the distinctive theme tune of The X-Files, passed away at the age of 78. Throughout the show’s original nine-season run, he composed music for over 200 episodes of this legendary supernatural series. Notably, Snow also contributed his talents to the revival series, two films, and the 2001 spinoff series, The Lone Gunmen.
In the early hours of the morning, as reported by Variety, Snow sadly passed away at his home in Connecticut. He leaves behind his wife Glynnis, three daughters, and four grandchildren. Sean Callery, who worked with him on shows like 24 and Jessica Jones, shared heartfelt words about the musician whom he regarded as both a mentor and close friend. You can read his touching comments below.
His extraordinary skill and endless imagination were surpassed only by the kindness he showed to other composers who looked up to him for advice. He offered insightful and enlightening comments when listening to the works of emerging artists (including myself). By blending his extensive knowledge with the nurturing advice that composers need – trust in themselves, develop their unique sound, and rely on their inner judgment – he did so with a sense of humor and humility, making his wisdom even more impactful.
Mark Snow’s Contributions To Television Transcended The Small Screen
The TV Composer’s Work Even Saw Him Top The UK Charts
A composer, schooled at Julliard, initially gained recognition in the television world following Aaron Spelling’s commission for the 1972 ABC police drama “The Rookies”. Later on, he skillfully created music for numerous legendary shows such as “Starsky & Hutch”, “Hart to Hart”, “Cagney & Lacey”, and “TJ Hooker”.
Yet, it was his chilling electronic tune for Chris Carter’s The X-Files, which later reached number 2 on the UK singles charts in 1996 when the TV show’s instrumental theme was released as a single throughout Europe. The music also made its way onto the charts in other European countries at that time, such as France and Ireland.
As a lifelong film enthusiast, I’ve been blessed to amass fifteen Emmy nominations over the years. Not only have I graced the small screen with my acting talent, but I also showcased my musical abilities in some of television’s most beloved shows. Among these were the Superman prequel series Smallville, Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Ghost Whisperer, and Blue Bloods, led by the charismatic Tom Selleck. My final professional credit was the long-awaited 2020 X-Men spinoff, The New Mutants.
