Legendary noughties indie band announce their biggest gig yet after confirming comeback and support artists in chaotic video
Reflecting on the tumultuous journey of Pete Doherty, I can’t help but be both captivated and saddened by his story. A prodigious talent who rose to fame with The Libertines, he navigated the heights of success only to be consumed by the pitfalls of addiction and personal strife. His romance with supermodel Kate Moss was a whirlwind of passion and drama that captured the nation’s attention, yet ultimately ended in heartbreak for both parties.
Noughties music legends, The Libertines are back.
The band led by Pete Doherty and Carl Barat has planned a major return, having organized their biggest tour yet.
Approximately 25,000 fans are expected to attend the performance of Pete, Carl, Gary Powell, and John Hassell, along with other band members, at Gunnersbury Park in August.
In a manner characteristic of them, the group excitedly broke the news by posting an unkempt video on TikTok. The video began with Carl saying, “Hey everyone.
We’re at Gunnersbury Park as we have a major concert scheduled here, one of our largest performances yet, on the 9th of August coming up next year.
Currently, Pete is reaching out to a few band friends to determine who will join us.
‘Has anyone actually seen Pete?’
Gary shook his, as John quipped: ‘Well he’s in the water waiting for his cue, isn’t he?’
Carl replied: ‘Alright, Gary, you’d better give him his cue.’
Gary walked towards a large lake and screamed ‘action’ whilst clapping his hands.
Pete, who famously dated supermodel Kate Moss, then emerged soaked from the lake water.
During their prime era, the musician donned his renowned red military jacket from The Libertines, while also showing off his bared torso beneath it.
‘Did anyone get back to you on support?’ asked Carl.
Pete added: ‘Yeah, I heard from Morrissey. Yeah, don’t think he’s up for it.’
When asked what Morrissey’s ‘exact words’ were, Pete clarified: ‘His exact words were, ‘No’.’
Standing up in just his jacket and underwear, he said: ‘Real Farmer are up for doing it.
‘Hak Baker is well up for it. The Lambrini Girls! Soft play…’
The band looked quizzical, before they pretended to have heard of the rock group.
Pete then added that fellow indie band Supergrass will be joining them at the gig.
The band shouted ‘alright’, before they told Pete that they would ‘see him next year’.
Pete then headed back into the lake, before he muttered: ‘I’m not going back under.’
In the year 1997, Pete teamed up with Carl to establish The Libertines in London. However, it took them until 2002 for their fame to spread across widely upon the launch of their first album, titled “Up the Bracket.
In the midst of a tumultuous struggle with substance abuse issues and internal disputes among its members, Pete decided to leave the band in 2004. However, they managed to regroup in 2010 and performed as headliners at the Reading and Leeds Festivals that same year.
Back in April 2014, The Libertines revealed their intention to reunite for a performance at London’s Hyde Park.
This year, they put out their fourth album titled “All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade,” which became their second UK chart-topper for the garage rock band.
In the 2000s, I was quite well-known, and my relationship with the iconic supermodel, Kate Moss, attracted a lot of nationwide interest.
At Kate’s fabulous 31st birthday extravaganza in January 2005, I was utterly captivated when they met. Not long after, he confessed to me, as if I were his confidant, that he had finally discovered the real deal – true love!
Their turbulent romance briefly ended when Pete failed to complete a stint in rehab in Arizona, with Kate saying at the time she had ‘various personal issues I need to address’.
In 2005, he not only sketched a portrait of himself and Kate using crayons and his own blood, but also wrote “I love Kate forever” on the windshield of his Jaguar shortly after appearing in court due to a drug charge. Pete is well-known for this act.
However, the couple then split for good in 2007 following a series of blazing rows.
Previously, Pete mentioned there wasn’t a single defining moment that led to their separation. Instead, he explained, “their realities didn’t quite align in the end.
During the peak of his professional success, the celebrity found himself persistently embroiled in legal issues and ended up being imprisoned for six months due to drug possession charges related to cocaine.
Since December 2019, Pete has remained sober, and he’s now established a home in Northern France with his spouse Katia and their one-year-old child, Billie-Mae.
In a conversation with the Sunday Times Home, Pete opened up about the less-than-wise financial decisions he made during the thick of his addiction. Now, he finds himself bearing the consequences.
He said: ‘Moving to rural Normandy probably saved my life.
Upon my initial relocation to France, I immersed myself in vibrant urban hubs such as Marseilles, Paris, Lille, and Perpignan. However, I quickly discovered that these bustling cities made it far too effortless for vendors to track me down.
Pete went on: ‘Even when we were having No 1 albums and I was making good money, I never saved or invested.
As my earnings grew, so did my expenses. Regrettably, I’m currently grappling with the repercussions of this spending habit – specifically, old tax bills from a decade past. I’m diligently working on resolving these financial obligations.
In the grip of addiction, it’s common not to always act with the best judgment.
Pete has since made an impressive comeback, and last year revealed he is once again a millionaire.
