As an ardent fan of Eddie Low, I can wholeheartedly say that his life was nothing short of a testament to resilience, talent, and the indomitable spirit of humanity. Born into poverty, blind since birth, yet he rose above all odds to become a beacon of inspiration for countless individuals across the globe. His 60-year career in showbusiness spanned continents and genres, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy that will continue to resonate for generations to come.

81-year-old Eddie Low, a well-known country musician from New Zealand, passed away in Christchurch on Saturday, following a tough fight against cancer that lasted over a year.

Born in Rotorua and legally blind, this crooner enjoyed a long, six-decade career in the entertainment industry. Throughout his remarkable life, he released more than 20 studio albums and numerous singles.

Eddie’s daughter Maria confirmed his passing in a heartbreaking Facebook post.

She shared, “Eddie Low’s music will continue to thrive eternally. At exactly 7:45 am on September 20, 2024, he peacefully departed this world, surrounded by cherished ones.

As a humble child born on the 14th of May, 1943, I found myself grappling with the challenges of poverty. Yet, it was this very upbringing that forged within me an indomitable spirit, unwavering drive, and innate ability that would come to define my journey.

People will remember Eddie not just as a cherished musician, but also as a pioneer and an influential figure who inspired everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Through his lively stage shows, the country musician became known as ‘a voice among a million’ because of his spirited performances.

He performed across New Zealand, Australia and internationally throughout his long career, and was renowned for bringing his A-Game to every concert.

Eddie’s music was recognized for its sincere and emotive tunes that blended the genres of country, folk, and pop.

Due to his remarkable musical career, he received the title “Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit” in the 2006 Queen’s Birthday Honours as a tribute to his services in the field of music.

Among his well-known tunes are the Maori Medley, Help Me Get Over, and Bonnie, Don’t Leave Me.

For several months leading up to his death, he kept on playing concerts throughout New Zealand alongside his group, The Highway Men.

Sadly, Eddie’s wife Kathleen died several years before him, in 2019.

He is survived by their children Taniya, Dayne and Maria.

A live-streamed memorial service was held in Christchurch on Thursday.
