Legendary Irish Singer Paddy Cole Passes Away at 85 After Brave Battle with Cancer

Irish singer and sax player Paddy Cole has died at the age of 85.

As a devoted admirer, I find myself compelled to share a somber update about an exceptional musician. Born on December 17, this extraordinary individual celebrated his 8th year among us in 2022. Regrettably, he was diagnosed with lung cancer that same year. During the final chapters of his life, he received hospice care. It is with a heavy heart that I relay this news.

Back in the swinging ’60s, I made my debut on the music scene with the legendary Capitol Showband, gracing stages as early as the ripe age of 12.

His father, who worked as a postman and also played in dance bands, was the one who initially exposed him to the world of show business.

Originating from County Monaghan, the vocalist relocated to Las Vegas during the early ’70s and joined The Big Eight Showband, a collective of talented Irish musicians.

Apart from residing in Dublin when he passed away, he and his wife Helen co-owned a restaurant in their native town, Castleblayney, as well.

Previously, Paddy confessed that he hadn’t imagined reaching the age of 85, given his diagnosis with an incurable form of cancer.

When asked about his response, he mentioned that his health fluctuates, with some days being better than others, yet he’s doing his utmost to present himself in the most positive light possible.

I maintain regular contact with those at the hospice, and they manage my pain medication. In essence, I’m just making the best of the situation.

The sad news has been verified that the renowned Paddy Cole, a cherished performer known for spreading joy through his lively character and catchy tunes, has passed away. This information was shared by his son Pat in a statement.

Over the course of his career, Paddy Cole’s saxophone, clarinet, and voice brought a unique mix of jazz, Dixieland, and showband styles to dance floors and performance venues, starting with The Capitol Showband and extending to his own Superstars.

‘His music transcended generations, creating memories that will forever be cherished.

We’d like to convey our heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the family, for the abundance of love and encouragement you have shown during these challenging times.

The spirit of Paddy Cole will continue through the melodies he crafted and the happiness he spread across the globe. Farewell, Paddy Cole, may you rest tranquilly.

The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins paid tibute to Paddy, saying:

Losing Paddy Cole represents the loss of a seminal figure from the golden era of Irish showbands.

This sentence maintains the original sentiment but uses simpler, more conversational language to convey the idea that Paddy Cole was an essential and influential part of the successful period of Irish showbands.

The impact that Paddy Cole had on music, particularly jazz, through his work with the Capitol Showband and creating a distinctive brass sound, will continue to be celebrated throughout future generations.

One important, yet often overlooked period in Irish music history is the showband era.

Certain towns or cities have gained notoriety due to the talented individuals they’ve nurtured. One example is Castleblayney, which has earned recognition as a breeding ground for the artist known as ‘Paddy’.

Paddy Cole’s music was top-notch, boasting jazz that rivaled global standards, and Sabina and I were fortunate to know and appreciate him not just as an artist, but as a cherished friend.

allow me to express my heartfelt sympathies to Helen, Paddy’s beloved wife, as well as his children Pat, Pearse, and Karen. I also extend my deepest condolences to the entire family, his fellow musicians, and all of his dear friends.
