Legendary 33-Year-Old Sitcom Is Still Dominating Streaming Despite Paramount Cancelling Its Sequel Way Too Soon

Though the recent reboot didn’t last, people are still enjoying the original sitcom. Starring Kelsey Grammer, the show first aired in 1993 and became a hit, running for eleven seasons before ending in 2004.

After 22 years, Frasier is now the ninth most popular show on Paramount+ in the United States. The show has been consistently ranked among the top 10 most-watched programs on the streaming service in recent weeks, and is now more popular than Neighborhood.

Even though American viewers still enjoy Frasier, it’s currently less popular than many other shows, including crime dramas and comedies. Right now, it’s being watched less than other programs on Paramount+, such as Tulsa King, Criminal Minds: Evolution, The King of Queens, and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Originally created by David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee, Frasier centers around Dr. Frasier Crane, played by Kelsey Grammer, as he hosts a radio psychiatry show. In 2023, Paramount brought the show back after nearly 20 years, with Dr. Crane relocating from Chicago to Boston to spend time with his son.

Despite the sequel being canceled in January 2025, the original show continues to do well on streaming platforms. The revival lasted for two seasons but received generally lukewarm reviews and didn’t attract enough viewers to warrant a third season. While the creators are free to pitch the show to other networks, no new home has been announced yet.

Frasier is still considered one of the best sitcoms from the 1990s. Trying to recreate that success with the new series was a huge challenge, and its cancellation shows why other classic shows from that time, like Friends and Seinfeld, haven’t tried to come back.

Many sitcoms from before the year 2000 have tried to come back, with mixed results. Some, like Fuller House (a continuation of Full House) and The Conners (following Roseanne), were fairly successful, lasting five and eight seasons, respectively. However, other revivals, such as That ’90s Show and Night Court, didn’t last as long, with both being cancelled after two and three seasons, similar to the recent Frasier reboot.

Despite the recent boost in popularity of Frasier on Paramount+, a third season of the reboot still seems uncertain. While it’s not impossible, a new season is looking less and less likely given the time that’s passed and the current level of interest. For now, it’s clear that fans are enjoying the return of this beloved ’90s show.
