After his successful debut at NADA Miami last winter, Lee Moriarty is back with his first solo exhibition titled Balance, opening at Night Gallery on September 27. This exhibition, curated by Adam Abdalla, features eight pieces that shift focus from the ring to the personal lives of luchadores, offering a contrast between their daring actions and quiet moments of relaxation and contemplation.
Drawing on his personal experience as a lucha libre fighter, having delved into the intricate llave style in Mexico, Moriarty examines his subjects from a unique insider’s viewpoint. With this double-sided perspective, he delves into themes revolving around identity, presentation, and what he terms the “underemphasized duality” in the lives of professional wrestlers.
In “Balance,” Moriarty explores the nuances of liminal states – combining elements of strength and weakness, grandeur and intimacy. By challenging the conventional boundaries between hero and villain, the artist creates a realm where the larger-than-life characters of the ring transform into something more relatable, more vulnerable, and surprisingly human-like.
The exhibit titled “Balance” will be displayed at Night Gallery’s Chapel Viewing Room from September 17 to October 18.
