Leanne Quigley: ‘Sophie’s Breast Cancer Battle Felt Like an Out-of-Body Experience’

Leanne Quigley, the victor on The Traitors, shared that her partner Sophie Jones’ latest struggle with breast cancer seemed surreal and almost detached from her physical self.

Previously serving in the military, a woman aged 29 has recently gained notoriety on the BBC program. She and her comrade, Jake Brown, were the victors, claiming the £94,600 cash award together.

Yet, mere weeks after coming back from filming, Sophie’s life took an unexpected turn for the worse as she was diagnosed with an aggressive type of breast cancer. The troubling development stemmed from the discovery and swift growth of a lump in her breast.

Although Sophie, her two-year-old twin children’s mother (Hudson and Harley), received a clean bill of health earlier this year, Leanne vividly remembers the intense fear she experienced back then, believing that Sophie might not make it through the ordeal.

In a recent heartfelt conversation, Leanne shared about the challenging phase experienced by their family, with the nerve-wracking two-week period when they anxiously awaited the results on whether Sophie’s cancer had progressed standing out as the most difficult time for them.

As a dedicated follower, I can’t help but reflect on an extraordinary moment that felt surreal and almost detached from reality – an out-of-body experience, if you will. Speaking to The Mirror, I shared my thoughts: “We weren’t sure if she would make it. The fear was palpable, absolutely terrifying. Every day, Sophie would plead with me, ‘Leanne, I don’t want to die… I long to see our babies grow up.’ It was the dread of the unknown that gripped us both.

While we were chatting, Sophie, aged 32, shared that she had been feeling remorseful because she couldn’t give her sons, who were born through IVF, the quality time they deserved due to the fact that the harsh side-effects of chemotherapy frequently kept her in bed.

Leanne remarked on the matter: “She needed to re-establish a bond with them. However, we acknowledged that if we hadn’t had the twins, our lives would have been quite bleak. They gave us purpose.

As a devoted follower recounting my account, I experienced Sophie enduring just five out of six intended chemotherapy sessions due to her lack of strength for the final one. A fellow army recruit remembered several blood transfusions and a lumpectomy performed on Christmas Eve as key aspects of her treatment regimen.

Fortunately, in January of this year, Sophie received a clean bill of health. After undergoing a precautionary radiation therapy regimen for two weeks, she eagerly anticipates “ringing the bell” on March 5.

After overcoming their health hurdle, the pair is now focusing their attention on wedding preparations. Sophie popped the question to Leanne in August of the previous year, mere days following Leanne’s initial chemotherapy session.

At the same time, their twins are adding excitement to their lives, and the pair are fully immersed in daily family experiences. Leanne admits that things have been quite unusual lately.

She mentioned: ‘We’ve experienced numerous instances where our lives were torn asunder – the past two years have been dreadful, except for The Traitors. Therefore, we aim to cherish each and every moment.’

After experiencing challenges such as cancer and the early arrival of the twins, Sophie finds that they have an indomitable spirit, a sense of strength that cannot be broken.

Last month, Leanne expressed her joy that Sophie overcame breast cancer after a tough fight against the disease, which had taken a heavy toll on both of them emotionally.

She posted a picture of her alongside Sophie at the hospital during treatment, and this was the most welcome and desired update for us: ‘This is the sole piece of information we were hoping for.’

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “On the 31st of July, 2024, I received the heart-wrenching news that my partner, the mother of my children, was diagnosed with grade 3 breast cancer. Witnessing someone you cherish battle through chemotherapy is undoubtedly among the most distressing experiences one can endure.

As an ardent admirer, I swiftly grasped the lesson that nothing should be taken for granted in this world, a truth painfully driven home by the bitter realization that tomorrow is never guaranteed. The specter of uncertainty gnawed at us from within, stealing our peace of mind and instilling dread in our hearts.

Yesterday, on 8th January 2025, the world’s strongest woman received the incredible news that she was cancer-free. What an amazing achievement! Words can’t express or capture just how proud I feel, and how awestruck I am by her strength each and every day.

Today marks the start of a joyous celebration, honoring us and our sons, as we embark on the thrill of the future ahead. I can’t express enough gratitude towards the NHS for miraculously preserving my entire family. A heartfelt appreciation also goes out to our network of support.

‘What a blessing it is to be enveloped in such an extraordinary circle of family and companions! To those who are battling, or observing their beloved ones wage this dreadful illness, know that you are seen and felt. Don’t lose hope.’

Sophie expressed: “You’ve carried yourself with such dignity, and guided me through all of this. To be honest, I can’t imagine anyone better to stand beside me. I adore you deeply.

‘Thank you for everything over the last 6 months. Now let’s go and enjoy our life.’
