Leaked Footage From The Legend Of Zelda Set May Answer One Big Question I’ve Had About The Movie

Nintendo and Sony are working together to make a movie based on The Legend of Zelda. While the film isn’t expected to be released until 2027 or later, details have been scarce. However, recently leaked footage from filming in New Zealand suggests we may now have a better idea of which game in the series the movie will be based on.

Someone filming on location recently captured a glimpse of the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie, and as a lifelong fan of the games, the costumes immediately caught my eye. It seems we’re getting a good sense of the story the movie will tell, and I’m really excited about it!

Zelda’s Costume In The Legend Of Zelda Suggests The Movie Is Adapting The Breath Of The Wild’s Timeline

The short clip featured actress Bo Bragason dressed in a blue tunic, tights, and a satchel. Her outfit strongly resembled the clothing she wears in the Breath of the Wild games, which are set far in the future after the events of earlier titles.

The history of The Legend of Zelda games is quite complex, generally dividing into three main branches: The Fallen Hero, The Child, and The Adult. Getting into all the details isn’t really important, though, because Breath of the Wild is set so far in the future. It’s currently unclear whether these newer games connect to any of the older timelines, all of them, or even none at all.

Unlike previous The Legend of Zelda games, Breath of the Wild features a Hyrule that feels much more open and less crowded. Players also have a lot of freedom to explore and complete objectives in any order they choose.

As a big film and gaming fan, I think it’s a good thing the upcoming Nintendo movie isn’t trying to directly adapt one specific game. It gives director Wes Ball and the team room to be creative with the story while still staying true to the spirit of Nintendo. Honestly, I’d much rather see them pull inspiration from across the Zelda series – incorporating cool elements from different games – than just retell the story of something like Twilight Princess or Ocarina of Time beat-for-beat. That would feel too restrictive, and less like a movie in its own right.

Link Is Sporting His Traditional Green Tunic

If you’re concerned about changes to Link’s appearance, rest assured! In the new footage, he’s wearing his iconic green tunic, not the Champion’s Tunic from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Gamers would have been upset if they hadn’t seen him in his classic green outfit.

More On The Legend Of Zelda

There’s been some frustration with the casting of relatively unknown actors in the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie, but this is actually a positive development.

Nintendo is probably aiming for the same success with the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie as they had with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is getting a sequel in 2026. A big reason Mario did so well – earning over a billion dollars – is that many adults grew up loving those games. This means Sony will likely feel a lot of pressure for the Zelda movie to perform just as well, and it remains to be seen if it can deliver.

Many gamers are excited about this, particularly those who’ve always hoped Nintendo would build a connected universe, maybe even a Super Smash Bros. movie. It feels like something I used to only dream about, so I’m really hoping Nintendo finds success in Hollywood with this project.
