League of Legends in 2025: New season model, rank resets
As a seasoned gamer with over a decade of League of Legends under my belt, I must admit, I’m both excited and apprehensive about the changes coming in 2025. The new season model sounds promising, especially the thematic acts and seasons. However, I can’t help but wonder what other regions besides Noxus we might be visiting.
In 2025, League of Legends will undergo numerous alterations. Some of the anticipated modifications include revamped season models, adjustments to the client, and a reset of ranks.
In 2025, prepare for the arrival of a fresh League of Legends season brimming with novelty, updates, and alterations! Among the changes are a revamped season model and a different approach to rank resets. Riot Games guarantees an exceptional gaming journey as they introduce thematic acts and seasons for players to explore. Let’s delve into this exciting transformation!
New Season Model in 2025
In 2025, League of Legends is planned to be structured into three thematic periods, each consisting of two acts. Each season will feature a distinct theme, with the first one being Noxus; however, the themes for the following seasons are yet to be revealed. The players can expect an exclusive journey within League, navigating various storylines, game modes, mini-games, and numerous other elements.
Riot Games developers have promised fans that special events such as Anniversary, April Fools, and Lunar Revel will persist across new seasons. Skin lines scheduled for release will align with each season’s theme. The aim is to enhance the player’s experience by delving deeper into Runeterra’s rich storyline.
League of Legends Client Changes
For certain gamers, the League of Legends client can appear cluttered at times. However, next year’s update is expected to change that perception significantly. Riot Games plans to overhaul the client, making it more appealing, structured, and organized. As per the developers, the revamped client will be less chaotic, incorporating the season theme and mirroring the enhanced gaming experience that Riot aims to provide to players. Apart from the thematic changes, you’ll also get a clear view of your progression throughout the season.
From the Activity Sidebar in the center, you can monitor time-bound events such as Lunar Revel, new champion launches, your ranked progression, mini-games, and many other activities. To declutter the primary page of the client, patch notes and additional data have been relocated to the Info Hub.
Each time a fresh update becomes available, an Info Hub will pop up above the Activity Center, displaying a continually updating list that includes cinematics, new character skins, newly introduced champions, esports news, developer updates, and more. For fans of Teamfight Tactics, you can switch to the TFT version of the Info Hub by navigating to the top-left corner.
Ranked Updates
2025 will see some modifications in the ranking system as well. Players have been vocal about their discontent with mid-season ranked resets, and Riot Games has taken notice. Starting from 2025, the game will only undergo one rank reset annually, at the beginning of each year. In terms of earning Victorious skins, there will be some alterations to that process as well.
To obtain the “chromaless” variant of Victorious skins, you previously needed to reach Gold level with at least 80 Summoner Points (SP), or accumulate 1000 SP below Gold tier. However, starting from 2025, in order to secure the base skin, you’ll need to win a total of 15 games in Ranked mode during each thematic Season, which can be played solo/duo, flex, or any combination thereof within those seasons.
As a fellow enthusiast, you might have thought that since there’s only one ranked reset, we can only earn one Victory skin. However, I’m here to clarify that assumption – each new season offers an opportunity to secure a Victorious skin!
Returning to League of Legends in 2025
Many individuals occasionally step away from playing League of Legends, with some absences lasting over half a year, which might impact their gameplay. For those who felt disheartened by dropping from Platinum to Silver upon returning, Riot Games suggests reintroducing them to the game in a more seamless manner.
After a prolonged hiatus, you may find yourself underperforming compared to your past performances. This could negatively impact your teammates’ experience and make Ranked matches less predictable. Currently, this trend continues due to a relatively low win rate. For instance, former Diamond players competing in Emerald are typically winning 48% of their games, while ex-Masters in Diamond are winning 49%. Riot Games also notes that it is still challenging to detect alternative accounts.
Next year in League of Legends, the Matchmaking Rating (MMR) is scheduled for a soft restart. Currently, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger players are being matched with lower League Points (LP) players, which has been causing frustration. To ensure a more even playing field, Riot Games will implement a “soft MMR reset” for each split. This means that everyone will essentially start from the same point on the leaderboard, offering you a fair opportunity to climb the top ranks.
Alt Accounts
An unexpected issue emerged with the gentle MMR: even secondary accounts managed to climb high in the ranks. Despite the current rank manipulation detector functioning effectively, a multitude of fresh accounts every season are artificially boosted or tampered with. Riot Games continues to brainstorm solutions for handling these situations appropriately.
Regarding the significant declines in rank positions, Riot Games acknowledges that they have not focused much on balancing skill distributions over time. It’s particularly challenging to gauge the disparity in skills between different regions. For instance, an Emerald-ranked player in North America (NA) doesn’t equate to a similar skill level in China or Germany. Due to rank inflation, particularly noticeable in larger regions, the quality of matches in Emerald tier was lower compared to other regions. This was primarily due to the vast range of skills among Emerald-ranked players and because Emerald often served as the top-tier placement for alternate accounts that excelled during the account creation process.
For some time now, this particular issue has sparked discussions among our community members, yet Riot Games hasn’t discovered an effective method to tackle the issue of rank imbalance, often referred to as ‘rank inflation’. However, they are well aware of these discrepancies and will keep a keen eye on how the situation develops in the future.
