Lea Thompson Reveals the Real Reason She Hid Back to the Future From Her Daughters

Lea Thompson played a significant role in turning the classic film Back to the Future into an all-time favorite. Her portrayal of Lorraine McFly significantly enhanced the movie. However, when it comes to their reaction, her famous daughters Madelyn and Zoey Deutch were moved to tears by it.

Thompson recalled a challenging aspect of her role as a mother while being interviewed. “My daughters were deeply affected by me kissing men on screen,” she stated. “I’m not sure if I was with them when they first watched the film. They would cry because, as children, I was starring in ‘Caroline in the City,’ and each week, I kissed a different man. When it aired on TV, they would start crying.” In essence, she didn’t expose them to such content because it had such a traumatic effect on them. To this day, I’m amazed when they can recite something from the movie, as I don’t recall showing it to them.

In a more recent interview, Thompson made this statement: “I didn’t display much of my work because I often find myself kissing people, which was distressing to my children,” she explained. “When they were young, headlines like ‘Mom is kissing someone other than Dad, and it makes me cry!’ would upset them.

The daughters of Thompson, namely Madelyn Deutch and Zoey Deutch, have made a name for themselves in the acting world now. Madelyn Deutch graced the TV series Outcast and also featured in her mother’s directorial venture titled The Year of Spectacular Men. On the other hand, Zoey Deutch has garnered considerable success as an actress; she is renowned for her roles in Everybody Wants Some!!, Zombieland: Double Tap, and more.

Back To The Future Flirts With Incest

An additional factor that might have caused Thompson’s daughters distress was her kissing a specific man. In the movie Back to the Future, Marty McFly (played by Michael J Fox) inadvertently causes his mother to split up with his future father, George (portrayed by Crispin Glover). Unfortunately, it turns out that his mother develops feelings for him and even kisses him. Although humorous, the situation is incredibly awkward.

Thompson embraced the incestuous scene without hesitation. In 2010, she recalled that director Bob Zemeckis praised her, saying, “You just went for it.” Her response was, “Well, thank you.” She certainly did. I found the complex aspect of that character intriguing. I appreciated the juxtaposition of innocence and the scene where I kiss him, and then, somehow, a strange part of the space-time continuum made me feel like I was kissing my brother. To portray her, I imagined a cat in heat, even adopting a peculiar purr to my voice.

And let’s face it, that’s not what kids want to see from their mother.

Back to the Future is streaming now on Prime Video.
