Layoffs hit ABC News and Disney’s entertainment TV channels
In simpler terms, due to decreasing viewership and revenue in conventional TV broadcasting, ABC News and the entertainment divisions of The Walt Disney Company are undergoing a 6% workforce reduction.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Disney would be reducing their workforce by 200 positions, and this cut will affect various departments within their television divisions. Notably, the most significant layoffs are happening in the news sector.
For several months now, there’s been talk about potential staff cuts within the news division, as it, like many other media outlets, has experienced a shift in viewership from traditional TV networks to online streaming platforms.
Approximately 40 employees from ABC News were let go during layoffs in October, affecting their television stations too, making a total of 75 job losses. The latest cuts, announced on Wednesday, will impact both the entertainment and news divisions of the network.

Hollywood Inc.
Godwin joined the Disney subsidiary, transitioning from CBS. She etched her name in history by becoming the first African-American to head the Broadcast News Division.
Almin Karamehmedovic, head of ABC News, penned a memo to the team stating that these reductions are intended to improve efficiency and prepare the organization for the evolving television industry landscape.
Karamehmedovic stated, “We need to reconsider how we operate in order to secure our team’s future, which unfortunately necessitates a decrease in our outstanding workforce.” He added that these choices are extremely tough and will certainly be hard on our organization today.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, ABC News is merging the teams from “Good Morning America” and its afternoon counterpart, “GMA 3.” Additionally, the staffs of news magazine “20/20” and late night program “Nightline” will now be part of the ABC News Studios production unit.
ABC News is also shuttering 538, the data journalism unit Disney acquired from founder Nate Silver.
