Law & Order and SVU are now on their winter breaks (When will the shows return?)
As a dedicated fan of both Law & Order and SVU, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness as we approach the fall finales on Nov. 21. It feels like the year is just flying by, doesn’t it? But fear not, my fellow crime drama enthusiasts! The shows will be back in 2025.
As we’re approaching the close of this year, it’s time for fall finales. On Thursday, November 21st, both “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: SVU” will air their final episodes of 2024. The bright side is that this hiatus is only temporary.
2025 will bring fresh installments, which is customary for television broadcast networks, even if it doesn’t always seem so. Over time, there have been adjustments to the schedule due to the pandemic and the 2023 labor action, but things are gradually returning to their regular course. This means a resumption in September and the usual winter break.
When will Law & Order and SVU return with new episodes?
As mentioned, there are no more episodes in 2024. NBC will bring back Law & Order season 24 and Law & Order: SVU season 26 in January 2025. The official date for the two shows is Thursday, Jan. 16. This is the same night that Found season 2 returns, bringing us a night of crime dramas on Thursday again.
8 p.m. ET/PT marks the start of a new episode of “Law & Order”, with “SVU” airing an hour later, which is consistent with their usual scheduling. NBC tends to schedule winter premieres in early to mid-January, as they often make up for the fall finales that take place around mid-November.
The advertisements for the two series don’t reveal any plot details, only confirming that both teams will persist in their efforts to safeguard the public. We can anticipate a blend of legal proceedings and the pursuit of justice for the affected parties.
Why are the Law & Order shows on a break?
It seems there’s an extended pause due to several factors. Primarily, it’s because during the holiday season, linear ratings tend to drop as people are traveling or spending time with loved ones, thus reducing their ability to watch live shows. To avoid potential losses and ensure the best viewership in the new year, broadcast networks choose to temporarily halt show airings.
Another major factor is tied to scheduling. The actors and production team require time for relaxation during the holiday period, and there’s a limit to the number of pre-prepared episodes. Consequently, the winter hiatus serves as a rest period and helps in distributing the available episodes more evenly.
On Thursdays, beginning January 16th at 8 PM or 7 PM central time, you can catch episodes of Law & Order and SVU airing on NBC. Don’t forget to stay updated by streaming previous episodes on Peacock!
