Lauren Laverne’s Joyful Return to BBC Radio 6 After Cancer Battle!
For the first time since disclosing her cancer diagnosis the previous year, Lauren Laverne has come back to BBC Radio 6.
During August, the presenter, who is 46 years old, temporarily stepped away from her morning show, after she disclosed that cancer was detected prematurely and unanticipatedly during routine screenings.
Later on, Lavern made up her mind to step down from the morning breakfast show and switched to a mid-morning timeslot. In her place, Nick Grimshaw, another popular radio personality, took over.
On Monday, Lauren returned to the radio with her fresh program, expressing delight at being back.
Before starting her segment, Lauren teamed up with Nick on his fresh breakfast show, sharing with him: “It’s terrific! To be honest, I’ve been absolutely thrilled. There’s a mix of anxiousness and excitement that comes from getting ready to start.
I’ve rehearsed a few times to get familiar with pressing the right keys again, which is what I primarily focus on. Experimenting with our latest additions and innovations, it feels incredibly thrilling!

After that, Nick expressed his joy: ‘It’s great to have you back! Your absence was definitely felt. We’re thrilled to have you returning to the airwaves!’
After launching her radio program, Lauren played her initial tune and expressed her delight at being warmly accepted once more.
She expressed: ‘It’s fantastic that Sly Stone is kicking things off! Thank you for allowing me to return and express myself freely here on 6 Music. It feels terrific to be back. Good morning! A big salute to Grimmy for an exceptional Breakfast Show. Let’s dive right in, shall we?’
In January, Lauren, the hostess of BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs and a frequent guest on The One Show, announced that she would be taking a break from her morning hosting duties.
In her statement, she mentioned that 2024 was particularly challenging for her, and there were moments when she doubted if she could ever come back to the cherished radio station again.
For the past six incredible years, I’ve had an immense pleasure (and a great deal of enjoyment) serving as the host of the Breakfast Show. However, it’s now time for me to hand over the reins, allowing myself the luxury of sleeping in a bit more.
Throughout my healing process, I rediscovered the strength of music, the importance of the company you keep, and how comforting it is to have emotional aid and happiness that comes from the radio.
I’m truly thankful for the opportunity to resume my passion and share it with our remarkable audience each day.

In the previous year, Laverne, known for her stardom in the ’90s indie band Kenickie, temporarily stepped away from hosting her BBC programs following a cancer diagnosis.
In November, she publicly announced that she received a clean bill of health. She took to Instagram to break the news, posting a radiant selfie with the caption: “Life is beautiful,” written on her sweater.
In November, Lauren resumed taping episodes for Desert Island Discs following a nearly 3-month hiatus from the recording studios. Some of her latest interviewees have been former England soccer coach Gareth Southgate and American singer-songwriter Cher.
Nick has been frequently filling in for Laverne on BBC Radio 6 Music since her hiatus in August.
In August, Lauren disclosed that her cancer was detected earlier than anticipated through a routine screening, and she is expected to completely recuperate.
Apart from expressing gratitude, she acknowledged her colleagues on various BBC programs for both their “assistance” and “granting me the necessary leave to recover.
During the time when she announced her diagnosis, Desert Island Disces had taken a hiatus. Upon resuming in September, they broadcasted previously recorded episodes instead.

In 2018, Lauren stepped in as a substitute for Kirsty Young on Desert Island Discs, as Kirsty was managing personal health matters. Eventually, Lauren took over the role permanently.
The mother of two hasn’t disclosed the specific type of cancer she was diagnosed with, but she mentioned upon making the announcement in August that it was discovered “surprisingly” during routine screening tests.
Later in November, she shared a heartfelt message expressing gratitude towards the hospital staff and her remarkable sons, Fergus aged 17 and Mack who is 14, as well as her exceptional husband, Graeme Fisher.
Hello again! I wanted to let you know that I’ve been taking some time off to recover, but now I’ve received the go-ahead. I’ll be returning to work with the fantastic BBC The One Show team on Tuesday for our TV show.
Apart from my ongoing tasks, I’ve been busy creating fresh episodes for #DesertIslandDiscs (coming up on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds shortly). Excitedly, I’m set to rejoin BBC 6 Music in the new year.
