Latin Grammys 2024: Édgar Barrera, Bad Bunny and Karol G top this year's nominations

As a seasoned music enthusiast who has traversed the globe attending concerts and festivals for decades, I must say that this year’s Latin Grammy nominations have left me absolutely thrilled! The diversity of talent, genres, and geographical representation truly reflects the rich tapestry of Latin music.

This year, Bad Bunny from Puerto Rico and Karol G from Colombia are leading the pack at the Latin Grammys with eight nominations each. However, Texas-based songwriter-producer Édgar Barrera is once again the frontrunner, boasting a total of nine categories he’s been nominated in. Last year, he was a force to reckon with, earning 13 nominations and winning three awards.

Despite the reggaeton duo having multiple category nominations, they are in contention with Karol G’s cumbia-pop song “Mi Ex Tenía Razón” (also nominated for Barrera) and Bad Bunny’s “Monaco”, all vying for the title of Record of the Year. The competition includes: Anitta’s “Mil Veces”, Camilo & Carin Leon’s “Una Vida Pasada”, Cimafunk & Monsieur Periné’s “Catalina”, Jorge Drexler’s “Derrumbe”, Fonseca & Grupo Niche’s “Con Dinero y Sin Dinero”, Juan Luis Guerra 4.40’s “Mambo 23”, Mon Laferte’s “Tenochtitlán” and Kali Uchis & Peso Pluma’s “Igual Que Un Ángel”.

Barria, known for collaborating with artists such as Shakira and Madonna, is vying for several awards including Album of the Year, Song of the Year (boasting three nominations in this category), Regional Song (with two nominations), Songwriter of the Year, and Producer of the Year.

Over the past ten years, Barrera has climbed the ranks to become one of his generation’s most prominent figures in the industry, showcasing his versatility by seamlessly blending and transitioning between numerous genres, such as urban music and Mexican music. This year, he has been recognized for his songwriting abilities with a nomination for Songwriter of the Year, which is attributed to tracks performed by Shakira, Don Omar, Becky G, Grupo Firme, and others. He’s in a competitive category alongside other well-known names, including Mexican music composer (and singer) Horacio Palencia.

Palencia, residing in Mazatlan, stated that this acknowledgement marks another year of hard work alongside numerous others who shared this voyage with him,” is a possible paraphrase.

In various categories for the awards, Karol G is nominated for “Album of the Year,” “Song of the Year,” and “Best Reggaeton Performance” for her track “Qlona,” featuring Peso Pluma, from the album “Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season).” This Colombian artist is also competing in these same categories alongside Bad Bunny, J Balvin with Jowell & Randy and De La Ghetto, Alvaro Diaz with Rauw Alejandro, and Kali Uchis, who herself features Karol G.

Album of the year nominees include: Ángela Aguilar, “Bolero”; Camilo, “Cuatro”; Xande De Pilares, “Xande Canta Caetano”; Karol G, “Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season)”; Kany García, “García”; Juan Luis Guerra 4.40, “Radio Güira”; Mon Laferte, “Autopoiética”; Carin León, “Boca Chueca, Vol. 1”; Residente, “Las Letras Ya No Importan” and Shakira’s 12th studio album in seven years “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.”

Here are the nominees for new artists: Agris, Kevin Aguilar, Darumas, Nicolle Horbath, Latin Mafia, Cacá Magalhães, The Garotins, Iñigo Quintero, Sofi Saar and Ela Taubert. Among those competing in the pop vocal album category are Caloncho, Emilia, Luis Fonsi, Mau y Ricky, Kali Uchis and Nicole Zignago.

The nominees for the pop/rock album category are “Cuando Ella Me Besó Probé A Dios” by Bruses, “Jet Love” from Conociendo Rusia, Jay De La Cueva’s self-titled work, “Reflejos De Lo Eterno” by Draco Rosas, and Francisca Valenzuela’s “Adentro.

Valenzuela expressed gratitude towards those who’ve backed her music career over the years, as she too has been recognized with nominations, including one for the alternative song category.

Speaking as a fan, I find the album ‘Adentro’ and the song ‘Déjalo Ir’ to be incredibly intimate, confessional, and personal creations. The ability to convey feelings and share my own unique perspective through music and lyrics is an extraordinary privilege and emotional experience. It gives me faith that art and storytelling can bridge connections between people.

This year, the Latin Recording Academy has expanded to include electronic music as a new genre. Two fresh categories are also being established: Latin electronic music performance and contemporary Mexican music album. In this inaugural year, nominees for these categories include Natanael Cano, DannyLux, Grupo Frontera, Carín León, Michelle Maciel, and Peso Pluma.

In a statement made this year, Manuel Abud, currently in charge at the Latin Grammy Awards, noted that an impressive number of 23,000 submissions were received, indicating both the expanding influence and global popularity of Latin music.

In simple terms, Abud stated to The Times that “The Latin Grammys have become a significant cultural force and a major player in mainstream music, setting records and leading the charts.” He added that the 25th anniversary is a significant milestone for us, and he believes the nominees symbolize the journey of migration and our current state as an academy.

58 categories of artists have been chosen as nominees for this year’s Latin Grammy Awards. To be eligible for nomination, songs must have been released between June 1st, 2023, and May 31st, 2024. Additionally, the majority (60%) of the lyrics in these songs should be in Spanish, Portuguese, or any local dialect to qualify for consideration.

This year’s Latin Grammy Awards are taking place in Miami on November 14th. You can catch the event live on Univision. To see the full roster of nominees, visit the official website.
