Late night hosts react to Stephen Colbert’s show being cancelled and one profanely blasts CBS
Many late-night TV show hosts have voiced their responses following CBS’s announcement of cancelling The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
The 2015-launched television show hosted by Colbert will end in May 2026, as revealed by network and Paramount executives on Thursday.
After checking the latest updates, Jimmy Kimmel, a 57-year-old host of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, expressed criticism towards CBS through his Instagram Stories.
Kimmel shared a video of Colbert’s declaration on his Instagram, writing as a caption: “I adore you, Stephen. I dislike you and everyone like Sheldon that CBS represents.
It seems that Kimmel might have been making a reference to the CBS’s Big Bang Theory universe, specifically the series like Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, but it’s not entirely clear what he was specifically pointing at.
Kimmel and Colbert became well-known for teaming up during the writers’ strike, creating a podcast to advocate for their striking workers.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but gush over the fact that they’ve graced each other’s stages time and again. Their electrifying chemistry was especially evident during their unforgettable skit at the 2019 Emmys, an event I rewatch just to bask in their shared brilliance!
Late night talk show host Andy Cohen, 57, also weighed in on the news, sharing he was ‘stunned.’
It’s hard to accept that CBS will be switching off at 11:30 following the local news. I’m utterly amazed. He is among only three late-night shows that have been recognized with an Emmy nomination. According to Deadline, he delivers a remarkable show.
It’s a mournful day for late-night TV, especially for CBS. Stephen Colbert is an exceptional entertainer, and I believe his upcoming journey will be remarkable.
Today’s not a great day for late-night TV or CBS. But Stephen Colbert is amazingly talented, and I can’t wait to see what he does next.
Cohen remarked that he was employed by CBS during the time when Letterman joined CBS, contributing significantly to making the network a dominant force in late-night television. Therefore, it’s unfortunate. I had worked with CBS for ten years. Truly, it’s a loss for CBS.
Cohen serves as the host for Bravo’s nighttime chat program, Watch What Happens Live. This show has been extended until 2027 with a new contract.
Other late-night television personalities such as Jimmy Fallon from The Tonight Show on NBC and Seth Meyers of Late Night with Seth Meyers (also airing on NBC) haven’t shared their thoughts on the matter so far.
Colbert’s program got terminated only a few days following his criticism of the network’s $16 million deal with President Trump, which he labeled as a “massive bribe.
‘According to a statement, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will conclude its remarkable journey on television screens in May 2026, wrapping up during the final stretch of the broadcast season.’

The executives stated that Stephen Colbert is indispensable, and they plan to end the Late Show franchise when he leaves. They take pride in Stephen having chosen CBS as his home, and they believe that both he and his show will be honored among the legendary figures who have shone on late-night TV.
The network stated that the reason for cancelling the show was strictly due to financial issues, given the tough circumstances in the late-night television industry.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to clarify that any points I’m discussing have absolutely no connection whatsoever to the success, content, or behind-the-scenes affairs of Paramount’s productions.
However, this decision was made shortly following criticisms from Colbert over the network’s $16 million settlement in the president’s lawsuit. Some speculate that the cancellation could potentially be a response of a political nature.
Should Paramount and CBS discontinue The Late Show due to political motivations, the public has a right to be informed about this. Moreover, they deserve programming of higher quality,” Senator Adam Schiff wrote on platform X, as he prepares for his appearance on Thursday night’s episode.
In simpler terms, it means that Trump claimed the network manipulated or misrepresented an interview they conducted with Kamala Harris during her presidential campaign by altering its content in a deceitful manner.
Despite denying any journalistic misconduct, a substantial sum is allocated in this settlement to cover President Trump’s legal expenses and future presidential library costs.
Prominently, they consented to make available the raw, unaffected records of 60 Minutes conversations with potential presidents.
Without a moment’s pause, Colbert boldly criticized his overarching company during his opening monologue on Wednesday’s show, admitting openly that he found their actions offensive.
In simpler terms, the late-night show host referred to the lawsuit filed against CBS as an annoyance, asserting that Paramount had the ability to challenge the claims more effectively – a stance supported by Paramount’s statement characterizing the allegations as entirely baseless.

As a devoted fan, I should mention that Paramount released Transformers: Rise of the Beast. In jest, Colbert commented on the movie’s poor performance by saying, “They sure seem to lack any worth,” playfully mocking the Paramount+ film that underperformed at the box office.
Later on, Colbert humorously quoted an untrue remark, pretending the network had said, “Feel free to use our funds, but we’ll always hold onto our self-respect.
‘You may, however, purchase our dignity for the low, low, price of $16 million. We need the cash.’
In reference to the company’s $8.4 billion merger with Skydance requiring approval from the Trump administration, the comedian contended that the settlement was essentially a large, generous payment or inducement.
The late-night presenter referenced an article by Puck suggesting that the merger might lead to him feeling a need to tone down his criticism of Donald Trump.
As a devoted admirer, I’m choosing to adopt a more impartial approach when it comes to political matters, much like our esteemed leader, David Ellison, has expressed his intention to do so at Skydance.
Larry Ellison Sr., his father, is an ardent supporter of President Trump and accompanied him at the White House in January during the presentation of a project called Stargate. It is now speculated that he is funding the $8 billion required for the CBS deal, according to reports from The New York Times.
On my show this week, I playfully addressed the recent rumors, humorously suggesting that my freshly grown mustache serves as an invisible shield, making it challenging for the new executives to locate and exert any undue influence upon me.

Just one day later, though, Colbert announced the cancelation of his program.
‘He informed the crowd that next year would mark the final season of the Late Show, as the network has decided to discontinue it in May. The announcement was met with strong disapproval from the audience members.’
‘It’s not just the end of our show, but it’s the end of the Late Show on CBS,’ he continued.
Colbert mentioned that he’s not being taken over by someone else, but rather, everything is simply coming to an end. He expressed his gratitude for having been allowed to host the long-standing program.
