Anne Reid, known for her role in Last Tango in Halifax, is joining Freddie Fox (Slow Horses) and Harriet Walter (Succession) in a new comedy drama created by Sharon Horgan. Called Youth, the HBO series will be written and executive produced by Horgan.
According to Deadline, the upcoming series will feature Horgan and center around a 50-year-old who is newly divorced and looking for both love and intimacy.
Okay, so I’m playing this character, and her life is crazy. She’s stuck taking care of her parents, who are getting older and need a lot of help, but at the same time, she’s basically having to raise her son all over again – he’s supposed to be an adult, but he’s really not acting like it. It’s a lot to balance!

Alongside Horgan, Faye Dorn from Merman, Jim Kleverweis, and Dawn Shadforth will serve as executive producers. Shadforth will also direct the project.
Anne Reid is most famous for her roles as Valerie Barlow on Coronation Street (1961-1971) and Celia Dawson in Last Tango in Halifax (2012-2020).

Freddie Fox is well-known for playing Jeremy Bamber, a mass murderer, in the 2020 series White House Farm. He also starred as James “Spider” Webb in the Apple TV thriller Slow Horses for its first three seasons before his character was written off the show.
The popular spy series, based on Mick Herron’s Slough House books and recently renewed for a seventh season, follows a team of flawed and unconventional MI5 agents. Gary Oldman stars as their leader, Jackson Lamb.

When discussing the possibility of killing off main characters, Herron jokingly apologized to the cast. He explained that he felt it was necessary to portray the risks of their characters’ jobs, even though those characters are meant to be in supporting roles, if he wanted to write a realistic thriller series.
He explained that keeping all the characters alive would have turned the show into a typical sitcom. He also wanted to explore the theme of grief, starting with the first major character’s death, and felt removing a character was necessary to do that.
I was interested in exploring how the other characters would react to losing one of their own, and the wide range of emotions they’d experience – from deep sadness to Roddy (Christopher Chung), who wouldn’t care at all.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant 100-page tribute to Harry Styles, is now available! You can find it at newsstands or purchase it online.
